#1: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:18 pm ---- will be swaping my rear axle next week and just wanted to know if i can reuse the 4 bolts that hold it in?
also what torque are the bolts ment to go to?
is there anything i should replace while its off?
thanks
#2: Re: rear axle Author: thatplace, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:39 pm ---- yes you can re use the bolts
#3: Re: rear axle Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:40 pm ---- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - do not re-use the bolts. £7 will buy you four replacements from main dealer. Not worth re-tourquing old nuts.
Check out the brake lines and flexi hoses. Replace while off if needed - maybe handbrake cable. Everything else can be done on the deck fairly simply...
#4: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:46 pm ---- Will get new bolts first!
anyone no the part number please?
thanks for the replies
#5: Re: rear axle Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:48 pm ---- You can re-use the bolts because they aren't stretch bolts. New bolts are nicer though.
#6: Re: rear axle Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 2:58 pm ---- To labour a point, of course you can use the bolts, but any bolt that has been under tension for a long period (stretch or not) will be prone to weakness. Maybe I am just too old..
My point being, if you are taking them out, it is far better to replace as part of the course for the sake of £7 and peace of mind...
#7: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:00 pm ---- of course new bolts, better to renew brake pipe as well, bearings, giving the calipers a damn good rebuild, possibility getting new hubs as well.......etc
the list can go on forever.
you putting on carls axle??
#8: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:02 pm ---- thanks edward. for £7 i might aswell get new ones.

yes, took it off today and its nowhere near as bad as in the pics i posted! has new calipers an pads, even the bolts that held it in where near new. was thinking brake pipes, shall i just get pug ones or is there ny other brands plp go for? do not want spend to much
#10: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:11 pm ---- did you have the brake compensation valve?

#11: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:13 pm ----
#13: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:28 pm ---- i didnt see it? does it have to be taken of correct? what happens if it is not? will check if my car has one before i take the axle off. its 52 plate would it have one?
#14: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:39 pm ---- need the vin to confirm.
unless you old car got ABS otherwise you should have one.
without one your rear will lock up very easily under braking
#15: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:46 pm ---- the rear axle is from abs car and my car is abs so should be ok? dont remember seeing that part?
how do i stop my brake fluid leaking out when i remove the old one?
#16: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 4:10 pm ---- that fine then.
of course is chewing gum, plug up the hole once the pipe is removed.
#17: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 4:20 pm ---- simple as that? will i need to bleed them?
#18: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 4:41 pm ---- yes for sure
#19: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 4:52 pm ---- great. is it as simple as easy bleed kit? read that cars with abs is harder? read that i ight even need pp?
#20: Re: rear axle Author: Seabook, Posted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 5:18 pm ---- you only doing the rear so it will be piece of cake.
easy bleed kit only need 1 people and is more reliable than 2 people method
#21: Re: rear axle Author: anton1989, Location: west midlandsPosted: Fri Oct 12, 2012 5:29 pm ---- so just bleed the rear?
