Used wrong grade engine oil, what do Ido?

#1: Used wrong grade engine oil, what do Ido? Author: xrblue, Location: cwmbran PostPosted: Sun Oct 28, 2012 8:17 am

Hi

I made a last minute decision to change the engine oil in my 04 plate 1.4 petrol 206.

I couldn't remember the correct oil so I asked the guy in my local motor factor.

I've recently found out he gave me the wrong oil for my engine!

I've used 5/40 fully synthetic

What should I do?

5W40 should be fine.

Will I need to renew the oil sooner than usual?

I thought 10w40 was the norm 5w/40 for the 180's. I use 5w40.

I've always used a 5W40 Total Quartz 9000 in my GTi...not that this is about a GTi.

So I have used the correct oil yay!

An internet search shows that 15/40 semi is the correct oil on some web sites, I'd post a link but I'm not sure if its allowed, I don't want to get banned.

Just to be sure... a change is every 20,000 miles?

If you hate your car do it every 20k miles. Better to do it every 10k miles or every year.

5W40 full-syn is perfect actually.
You will definately not need to change it sooner.

What brand though?

'Don't have any experience with that.

Garage I use has been using Comma oil's for years, no complaints yet.

I had a chat with the Comma rep start of the year, we where talking low saps oils for DPFs Laughing

Id put Comma oil in my own car if I didnt already have plenty of Total oil still in my stock.

It seemed smoother to drive when cold this morning but it could have been coincidence

Posting links is fine, you wont get banned for that (Unless it's NSFW types of links lol), if you do the admin who banned you is clearly didnt get laid the night before..

The viscosity part isn't as important now (yeah I do know its effects) you need the api or acea grade specification. A solid quick way is to use www.commaoil.com/products bang in your registration number (no need to fill in your postcode) and your lubricants are listed. Its not foolproof but its good enough Smile
