#1: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 6:19 am ---- Hiya guys, just a quick question...
Ive got a 2001 Y reg 206 GTI. I bought a new sensor as stated in topic, but it was all green, the one I took out the side of the engine is all green except a yellow band. Does this matter?
When I plugged in the new sensor the car wouldnt tick over correctly, like going from 300 revs to 800 then 300 then 800, about 2 times a second. Was like this for 3mins then I gave up and replaced the old sensor.
With the old sensor in the engine, it does the same thing when cold, but after 1min (warm up time) the engine idles smooth as silk.
Can anyone send me a pic of their coolant temp sensor and if it has any yellow band around it close to the thread on the green plastic, furthest away form the connection plug wire.
And would a dead/dying coolant temp sensor cause my problem?
Many thanks.

#3: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 6:10 pm ---- sorry for late reply, been slaving in a facotry hehe.
erm, no idea, when i plugged in the new sensor, it didnt work at all, engine was spluttering like crazy. putting old sensor back in and all was fine. and the shop i use had 3 on its computer system for the GTI alone, but none had a yellow band around them. all 3 had same connections, just different colours.
Its not a seal, no. Its just a yellow band around the green plastic, ill try and get a pic tomorrow.
#4: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 6:16 pm ---- I have just hijacked this picture from another thread on this site, if the owner does mind I will remove the picture. but this picture shows a green coolant temp sensor with the same yellow band around it, same as mine, but not in the shop
#5: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 11:41 am ---- Old thread, but just bumping it up as problem still exists
#6: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Fri May 03, 2013 11:54 am ---- That's my picture. Can't see a yellow band at all.
Coolant sensors can be had from Euro Car Parts. Part number 224735211.
#7: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Fri May 03, 2013 12:25 pm ---- my 180 is all green with no yellow band
#8: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: dannyboy-gti, Location: West SussexPosted: Fri May 03, 2013 12:53 pm ---- Why do you suspect the temp sensor? Have you tested it with a meter?

The yellow band is clearly visible in your picture mate, how can you not see it lol
Cheers for the part number, but its still the wrong sensor, tried it off eurocarparts, made my tick over insane.

Its just what my mechanic said, hes my uncle so doubt he will be ripping me off, but at the same time he hasnt tested anything for a definitive answer.
Any ideas for my engine being horrid and lumpy tick over when cold, but perfectly smooth when warmed up?
Also, the worst part about it is, sometimes even when cold starting, the engine is fine. Tick over is fine. Sometimes when cold starting its lumpy like 300rpm to 800rpm, bouncing.

I think you'll find that yellow is the sealing rubber lip on the plug connector, not a band on the sensor.
There are two types of engine/dash gauge (dual ellement) sensor for a 1.4i at least.
#12: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 1:35 pm ---- ill get a close pic of mine. Its solid plastic. No seals between that or the green plastic. Just a chabge in colour, evenly printed on.

#14: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 1:48 pm ---- It might be a seal afterall, judging by the way the grime has set. not 100% sure tho. can't feel any change though, and no ridges, which you would expect if it was a seal.
Is anyone elses the same sensor colours as mine?
#15: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Fri May 03, 2013 2:26 pm ---- Plug the car in to any scanner that gives live data and see what the coolant temperature is.
Lumpy idling could be down to dodgy lifters...all sorts of reasons.

Would "dodgey lifters" cause the car to be lumpy, then after 1min be fine?
Even now a'days I start the car, if its ticking over like a hoebag, I turn the car off instantly, wait 20seconds then start the car up again and its always fixed, ticking over perfect.
NOTE: Forgot to mention, if I leave the car ticking over like a b***h, sometimes (2 out of 10 times) the car will stall itself and the engine managment light comes on. But after a 10min wait with key out of ignition, the next time I start the car all is fine and no warning lights.

That is not a seal, I take it back.
Scan the ECU for codes.. Your EML came on.

From experience those symptoms match dodgy lifters perfectly.
#19: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 4:01 pm ---- So, when u say lifters, what exactly do you mean mate, lol. Expensive? Worth changing on an 900 quid car? Thank you for your input!
#20: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Fri May 03, 2013 4:26 pm ---- Hydraulic lifters. I had a used Longman head fitted to my car and it would run rough for the first 200 yards ish. When it was really cold weather it would put the ECU light on for a short while.
I could switch the car off and restart it and it would run smooth.
When I had the throttle bodies fitted the only mechanical change was some new Peugeot lifters and the camshafts. No more spluttering.
#21: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 4:44 pm ---- Hmm, done a tiny bit of research and by lifters you mean Hydraulic Tappets? www.eurocarparts.com/e...c42&000571
Is that them?
And guessing I need 16 of the little buggers?
Plus is it a lengthy job? To change them, would it cost an arm and a leg at a garage?
#22: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat May 04, 2013 2:00 am ---- Bit of a job yes. It's basically a cambelt job plus a bit more.
#23: Re: Coolant Temp Sens Author: MrMorris, Location: Over that hill.Posted: Sat May 04, 2013 6:24 am ---- Ahh cool, thank you for you input again Edward, standup guy
Might just replace the camblet at same time then. Although that was only done 21k ago. Cheers again.
