Engine "hunting"

Hi all. Has anyone else had an issue with "hunting"?
I've had my 138 GTI for 5 years and has had this fault for a while now.
Has been serviced regularly with genuine parts inc spark plugs so I'm hoping it'll be a cheap fix.
Am I right in saying it could be an air leak?
The rev counter needle isn't erratic, drives fine, and fuel consumption seems ok. Never had a warning light on just wondering where to start.

the problem seems to be the butterfly sticking in the fully closed position, which it is not normally in as it has to be slightly open to allow idle, how ever because the TB is sticking closed the motor has to drive back to open which is more open than the ECU (hysteresis or back lash) expected causing revs to rise and the ecu driving the throttle back to closed then repeats it.....i got a second hand TB problem gone ...or first try a TB learn if you have had the battery off

Clean or replace the ICV.

Have cleaned throttle body, and also had battery disconnected to see if this might reset the parameter but no such luck.
I'll try an ICV/TB combo and see what happens.

The throttle butterfly is always 100% closed at idle. There is an extra path for the air to take via the idle control valve at idle speeds.

no it has not....you shut the butter fly and the car will stop (fact) or should i say the 180 configure like that ...just read top topic its a 138 sorry
