Head Gasket Price?
-> 206 Problems

#1: Head Gasket Price? Author: pongo06, Location: South Coast PostPosted: Wed Dec 19, 2012 8:38 am

Hello.

I've got a 206 2002 1.4 Look with about 90,000 miles on the clock. I recently noticed alot of Oil in the coolant reservoir and had the 'STOP' management light come on beeping, along with the temperature shoot up twice on a recent journey.

On top of this i noticed a mayo like substance under the coolant reservoir cap. However there doesn't appear to be any coolant in the Oil bay or on the oil dipstick.

So i took it into the garage and as I feared they've diagnosed it as the Head Gasket's gone. They've quoted me £585.00 plus VAT. Does this sound like a fair price? Or could it in fact not be the head gasket at all and the garage could be taking me a ride?

Thanks in advance.

Search headgasket - they're some/most of the symptoms. I'm sure you could get it cheaper if you shopped around, but that seems about right.

On a side note, if you're about to spend £702 on your car, is it worth it? Could put that £700 towards you're next car and sell yours as is.

Unfortunately Quarmbo might be right if u scrap yours and invest the bill money into something new...however it can be a case of better the devil you know.at least once its done u know its gonna be good for a few good years to come and there will be other components they change in for that price

like the timing belt and tensioner...the water pump...the oil and filter...the engine coolant and flush...the valve stem oil seals...the head bolts...the head and further gaskets..
the rocker cover gasket...and at a push the air filter.spark plugs.fuel filter......now although some of these parts will not need doing most will so it sounds like a decent deal when u include these things.

But remember some places will charge u more than the quote(wether its legal or not i dont know)but they might add costs like getting the head skimmed or even a recon. Head needed so if u do go for this option make sure u know and get it wtitten down on a written quote what your paying for.what is included.how long they will need to do the job and any other precaution u can think of...u really must protect yourself because its a lot of wonga mate

that almost defently sound like the head gaskets on its way out mate, personaly, id buy the gasket and headbolts and do it myself with a mate. Iv also known a couple of mates to go to the nearest college and ask motor vehicles teachers to do it as a foreign job and they only got charged 80quid labour!

Why dont you try what another guy on here is doing and ask on here if anyone in your area has any idea of how to do this and offer to provide a crate of beer ot sum bevvy and £50quid or so for them to come to you and help get the job done...u buy the parts and between you get the car done and give the guy cash for his assistance...

Even better if there's plenty of infoex members near to you as u might get a couple of willing toolslags to do the job with u...

#8: Re: Head Gasket Price? and now engine management light Author: pongo06, Location: South Coast PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2012 11:10 am

Ended up getting the Head Gasket etc done, shopped around paid £510 including VAT in the end. But got the car back on Saturday and 10 mins later the engine managment light (yellow one that looks like an engine) came on and has stayed on ever since.

The car appears to be running fine though, has anyone else experienced similar after a head gasket/big job? Any ideas what it could be? Guna take it straight back to garage 2moro.

Thanks again, Merry Christmas!

Regards charging more than the quote it depends if it is a "quote" or an "estimate." Even then there are so many shades of grey and there are parts that can't be examined until the car is stripped.

A quote should give a detail breakdown of parts and labour, what is included and what isn't and any other items that MAY be needed should also be priced and shown as possibly required. A quote should be correct for the parts that are changed but if more work is needed because damaged items are unexpectedly found you will be asked to pay for those additional items. However, if the quote includes £10 for the gasket itself and the gasket is actually £30 that is tough luck on the person providing the quote - they should have researched the price.

An estimate is a finger in the air price and has almost no validity in law. If the estimate includes £10 for the gasket itself but the gasket is actually £30 tough luck on you.
