1.1 206 Y Reg Starting Issue

#1: 1.1 206 Y Reg Starting Issue Author: JakeEy PostPosted: Thu Jan 03, 2013 7:52 am
    ----
Hi guys, thought I would sign up and seek some advice here as the garage I usually go to are messing around so not wasting any more time with them.

I had a problem starting the car last week (was turning over but not starting), thought it was the battery and we were able to jump start it easy enough but while driving the engine management line turned on and the car attempted to stall but continued on without a problem.

A couple of days later it was doing the same so got it towed to the garage and they had a look round it, they replaced the spark plugs, cleaned up the crank shaft sensor and another sensor? (they didn't name that one) and it was running fine again for another couple of days.

Now yesterday I take it to work, 6 hours later I go out and yes its the same issue.

I can get it tested but needs towing and the price of that on top so just looking for a cheaper option to start with.

After reading about it could be a number of things but starting to think would it just be worth replacing the crank shaft sensor as its cheap enough and (hopefully) an easy enough fix to do in a works car park.

Thanks.

How did they come to the conclusion of crank sensor? I would look at what spark plugs (Bosch recommended usually) or coilpack. But could be a number of things. Could be your starter?

When they had a look the said it was not sparking and the sensor was in a sorry looking state so they cleaned it up and replaced all the spark plugs.

I did mention the starter but they said because its turning over its fine, we did try using easy start but that did not get it going either the second time round.

Coil pack then if it's not sparking. If you've got the management light on, you could read the fault codes.

It sounds like it needs a new battery...basicaly...its not starting without extra power from a donor battery says u need a new battery...check to see if batry has a date stamp on it and enquire about a higher power/better drain lvl.from your batry seller

I agree with bezford, it wouldn't start until you jumped it then it started suggests the car is fine but not the battery. I think it was running crap immediately after this as your battery was probably really really flat. Pop into halfrauds and get a free battery check.

Hi Guys, sorry for late reply.

Managed to get it towed to a garage and diagnosed for £25 and it flashed up as an injector fault (did not get any codes from them but can do if need be)

Anyway, he had a look around and the cables leading to the ecu were a little loose so he fitted them back in and started the engine first time. He left it running and had another look around, he moved the cable harness? leading from the ecu into the car and the engine cut out.

Started up again first time and has not cut out etc since running. He left it overnight and started straight away from cold again.

What he said is that it must have just been a loose connection or could it be a more serious issue such as the ecu itself playing up?

Loose connection worsened by cold.wet.weather...sounds about right but why did your mechanic miss this???id try somewhere else in future for repairs n servicing.

Always worth starting from the basics. So easy to assume that the simple first step checks have been done and then embarrassing to discover that they haven't. That is a big risk with remote diagnosis.

Well I will see how it goes over the next few days and hopefully it was just a bit of a dodgy connection. Yeah bezford I had been going to the garage for a few years now but has slowly got worse over the years, this new one seems a bit more clued up so will post again in a few days if its still running fine!

If it was a loose connection how did connecting another battery help it start? Very strange but glad you're getting to the bottom of it! I had a non start fault with mine which I traced to the big plug that all the engine wiring goes into, one of the pins was making a bad connection
