#1: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: nrvallen, Posted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 5:51 pm ---- Dear All
Thank you for any help you can provide.
My girlfriend's 206 (2003) constantly cuts out when slowing, either braking or changing down a gear, but this only seems to happen when you've gone above say 20mph. When pottering around at low speed it rarely happens.
It has no issues re-starting, first time, every time. It idles well and doesn't appear to misfire.
It has had a dealership diagnostic check which returned no faults. A new idle-speed-control-valve has been fitted and it has a new software download. However, it's no different.
Some things I have noticed that might provide a clue as to the cause:
It has been damaged at the rear light in the past, water was coming in;
The front and rear lights on the passenger's side seem to blow with alarming regularity;
Occasionally the airbag light will come on and the temperature will read high despite the engine having plenty fluid and running cool.
So far the only response we've received from the local garage is 'baffling' so we're becoming desperate and about ready to give up on it.
If anyone could help we would be very grateful.

I think there is a guide in the "how to" section.
I am assuming that as the garage has looked at it all other items are present and correct. Although the airbag and temp will need sorting eventually. The airbag light is MOT failure if it is on at test time.

#4: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: bezford, Location: darlingtonPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:01 pm ---- Sounds like a slight lift on the tickover...throttle cable...just set the clip on the cable a fraction lower to inctease idle slightly.
What condition is your battery in???if u try to start car with lights on do they dipp a lot or not???
#5: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing d Author: nrvallen, Posted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:01 pm ---- Thank you, indeed many photos are unfortunately missing.
We have fitted a new idle control valve so don't believe that is the problem. That was the garage's first thought.
From what I've read the coil pack and earth lead are potential issues. But then I read about a speed sensor in the gear box - which sort of fits with it always happening during a change in speed.
Will look into stepper motor, thank you.

It starts without any issues, the battery seems strong.
Also, it idles fine when standing still. If revved out of gear it will return to a steady idle speed. Only cuts out when mobile, slowing down from 20 mph or above.
#7: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:07 pm ---- Apologies: missed the fact it has a new idle speed control valve. Note that is the same thing as stepper motor.
It might be worth just disconnecting and reconnecting the speed sensor and the ECU plugs. That may be enough to clean a dirty connection that is causing an intermittent fault.
EDIT: the only speed sensor on these also sends its signal to the speedo. I am not aware of more than one speed sensor. Last edited by kandlbarrett on Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:13 pm; edited 1 time in total
#8: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:08 pm ---- Possibly dirty MAP sensor but unlikely.
The trouble with this type of fault is that you can put new faults on the car looking for it just by disturbing something so only do one thing at a time. That way if it suddenly gets worse you know which single item you last touched.

Some left a message there under the name 'Sale' that describes our issue exactly. Seems a replacement coil pack and MAP sensor in addition to the stepper motor (which we've already replaced) solved the problem.

Thank you. That seems sensible.
Hoping these parts can be fitted ourselves to save cost.
#11: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:15 pm ---- Do them one at a time. It is unlikely to be both; I would plump for MAP first unless strong advice from more knowledgeable member.
May be worth getting fault codes read first. Some fault codes are stored but don't bring the warning light on.

#14: Re: Need assistance - 206 constantly cuts out when slowing down Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Tue Jan 08, 2013 6:26 am ---- Rob206: follow the advice above.
1) remove and clean stepper motor and airway.
2) clean MAF
After that you are probably into component changing - do that one at a time not all in one go.
1) stepper motor.
2) MAF.
3) coil pack.
They are all testable but not without expensive equipment.
You can cheat the idle speed by setting the throttle cable to hold the throttle open very slightly; others here will recommend that, but it is NOT how idle should be controlled on these cars and MAY give an MOT failure due to emmissions. Doing it this way will also slightly increase MPG. Last edited by kandlbarrett on Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:10 am; edited 1 time in total
