I wouldn't trust anyone else on my cars. It makes sense that the instruments and lights are being affected by the alternator. The same as a weak battery can affect them too much voltage can also have a similar affect. As you say Austin, the bulbs would be likely to go as a result. Very difficult to measure a spike in voltage when its sporadic. I was measuring through the cigarette lighter until I shorted the circuit and blew the fuse. I think they were just lucky when they caught it.

It's the weak point in a circuit. If your bulbs goes generally your fuse doesn't go. From memory I think the fuse is 15A so it would take a little bit to blow that but still affect other elements.

They had the voltage regulator changed in the alternator as that showed up an intermittent fault. They tested it for most of yesterday and again this morning and no issues. I drove a mile and it went mental again and came up with a load of warnings including 'battery charging fault' which is new. It also sounds like a sewing machine so can only presume something within the alternator isn't right or at least on the aux belt. Will check that out tonight.

I suppose if the belt isn't working the alterntator properly, you'll have a flat battery in no time. Was the Battery light on? Didn't they change the whole alternator? Get it back to the garage if its worse!

It's automatic tensioner on this but I will release it to see if the whining sounds reduces so I can pin point it to the alternator. they didn't change the whole alternator just the voltage regulator but it was done by an auto-electrician. When I was parked up I check the battery voltage with the engine off and it was at 12.6v then with the engine on [no lights etc] it fluctuated between 12 and 13 before going back to a steady 14.2v. It's back in tomorrow morning but I'm tempted to take it to peugeot if it doesn't get sorted soon.

Mine has an auto adjuster so should be right but it's currently squealing like a sewing machine. Sounds pretty bad. I can barely move my belt so I was wondering if the tensioner needs replacing despite it being a year old

Anyway, dropped it off again today. Having a new alternator completely. Given the sewing machine sound I think the bearings are shot in it. Between that and the drop in voltage I'm hoping it sorts it.
I did measure the voltage across the battery this morning. and it's reading at 14.2v from terminal to terminal. If I change the negative from the terminal to the bodywork I'm looking at 13.8-9v. He's checked all the groundings and the cables and said they were fine. I'm clutching at straws trying to be helpful [but probably a hindrance]!
