When i indicate right and turn the steering wheel back to central position the left indicator comes on???

only happens when i turn the wheel a certain distance round.
is there something i can do or do i have to replace? if so how?

New comms unit I think. Not cheap though.

why would the ecu control the auto cancel? surely its either a bit snapped off or the indicator gone wrong?

The comms unit is the module with all the stalks attached (around the steering wheel) which includes electronics and is not the ECU or BSI.

No the comms unit. That's what the indicator plugs into.

Depends on the age of your car. My daughters (pre plex "W" reg) was a simple fix by removing the steering surround, removing the indicator, carefully taking apart the switch section of this, cleaning and re-assembling.

Can't recall all the detail of exactly how it all came apart now as it was well over a year ago but the indicator has worked without problem since. If I recall correctly the switch was full of brass filings and taking it apart and re-assembly was easy to do.
