#1: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Thu Jan 24, 2013 2:19 pm
    ----
Hi guys been on the forum for a while but don't really post much up. Iv got a 1.4 HDI i brought in august with 74k with plans of tuning and charge cooling. Loads of pictures to follow hope you like it....

The day i brought it driving it back from Luton to Bristol

Took the brakes of for a clean and saw they where pretty thin so thought id treat my self to GTI brakes and beam

Remapped it up to 85BHP print outs linked, goes pretty good for a 1.4 !!! very very happy with it.

www.hdi-tuning.co.uk/i...-85BHP.jpg

Being human i wanted more so de-cat, it did make a little difference by reducing lag and allowing us to do some more tuning up to 95BHP no print outs for this at the moment. No pictures of this as there on my mates phone but ill put them up one day.

Clutch seemed like it was on its way out then started slipping when i had a full car, so with the future in mind got a paddle clutch(left ones for the 1.4HDI the right ones for my mates 2.0HDI)

Wanted to get rid of the standard turbo box as it just looked boring plus the plans of the charge cooler to come so i brought a few pipes and reducers and lathed a 3" bar of alloy down to make the turbo flange. Fitted it and it looks good, don't think there is any performance difference maybe a little less lag as the box has a baffle plate but nothing special.

Brought a charge cooler, radiator and the Bosch water pump, this will be my next project to plumb it and go stage 2.

future plan are hybrid turbo straight through pipe. Ill keep you up dated.

Thanks glad you like it, not sure how im going to jam the charge cooler in.
Yeah steves my brother so unlimited map work. Still very surprised about how powerful a 1.4 can be, spins the hole way through second in the wet, not much but for a 1.4!!

liking what you've done so far! really interested in this as i'm a bit of a 1.4HDi fan so will be interested what the baby derv can do. Keep us posted.

whats make is the paddle clutch and whats it like to drive round on?

PS. One of my favorite colours on your 206.

I think its a panther but ill have to double check. Is good once you've got going but wouldn't recommend it unless your going to be tuning it. Took a while to bed in as it ceramic but its getting better/im getting used to it.

Iv also fitted EGT and Inlet temperature probes. Plus boost gauge. Will put some pictures up one day.

#6: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: southwestchap, Location: Devon PostPosted: Fri Jan 25, 2013 8:06 am

i remember steves post on when he got his hands on the 1.4 for tuning purposes (im guessing yours) and said they ran hellish high EGTs but gave no figures as such.

I reckon by removing the CAT and making the exhaust straight through would help. Defo interested in how you have installed these on you car. hopefully that one day is soon!

Nice to see another 1.4hdi Smile

I've a 307 1.4hdi, I'd like a map, but I live too far from Steve.

I may wait until I don't need the car for a week, then I guess I could post him my ecu?

#8: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Fri Jan 25, 2013 10:09 am
    ----
Yeah you could always post your ecu down. If you do next day before 12 he can get it and send it back up the next day.

If some ones interested in the fitment of the Temperature probes ill take some pictures as soon as i get a chance.

Got some pictures of the temperature probes, just drilled and tapped them in to the exhaust and inlet. I have the gauges in the glove box which can be linked to the computer to record it thought a drive.

Fitted the pre rad for the charge cooler today, think im going to need a smaller charge cooler as there is no way of it fitting without a bonnet scoop.

The rad as it comes, it has a hole for the thermostat and some random lump of plastic on it.

Plugged the thermostat hole with a thermostat out of an old car.

Got the Dremel out and cut the lump off the side to make it thinner.

After alot of trial and error i made a bracket up (is green because that was the only paint i had to hand and you cant see it anyway)

Mounted on the other end by screwing straight into the plastic front and drilled a massive hole to fit the bleed pipe through into the engine bay.

Looks pretty good with the bumper on just need to find another smaller charge cooler.

Any ideas on charge coolers, what cars come standard with them ?

I'm dying to hear about this project, since adding a regular intercooler to non-intercooled car is instant MOT failure around here. I've been thinking about this chargecooler painted black right after the turbo with small 90 degree turns. Unfortunately, it's rather expensive and I'd like to see some actual results before I go for it Smile

Still in the process of looking for a cooler which will fit, should be soon.

Ill measure it up this time !

Glad your interested, hopefully you'll fine away around the mot problem:/

defo following this and see what the 1.4 can do. i fancied intercooling mine but try to keep a little OEM though. damn PAS pump being in the way though.

Fit an electric PAS pump then. If it fits!

#15: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:44 pm

Will probably be able to fit electric PAS but what will i gain from that?

I was referring to southwestchaps comment about the PAS pump being in the way.

#17: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: southwestchap, Location: Devon PostPosted: Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:12 am
    ----
Yea ive beening looking into it and seeing what the best route to use for the PAS.

Benefit is that you could use the IC setup from a 1.6hdi 206 to keep OEM.

#18: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:00 pm

I guess i could work if i brought a barrel cooler. Then put it across the engine.

#19: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: TelaKeppi, Location: Finland PostPosted: Mon Feb 18, 2013 3:51 am
    ----
That's the way I've been envisioning it. The smallest AVT Barrel chargecooler should fit, but bending the pipes could be an issue. I'll have to make cardboard model to see how it fits. A real bonus would be if it fits under the OEM engine cover to make it look completely stock.

They are 16/205/... from a 307 with 195/45 tyres on them.

Colour is light anthracite, just waiting on the spacers so they don't rub on the struts then they will be on !!!

Brilliant Smile what size spacers you going for?
Are you or have you lowered the car?

#24: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Wed Feb 20, 2013 2:31 pm

Got 20mm spacers hopefully turn up tomorrow. The GTI axle i brought is lowered i think, but im going to lower the front on 35mm springs then refurbish the rear axle/set it to an appropriate height.

Sounds like a plan mate :] I went to IM axle to have mine refurbed and they were brilliant Smile
let me no how you get on with the 20 mm spacers as i want some but dont no how much to go by, dont want no scrubbing :] Nice updates mate :] Keep it up :]

#26: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Thu Feb 21, 2013 3:20 am

Yeah hopefully the spacers will turn up today as im going to be sat by the door waiting Smile

Iv watched enough videos and think i should be fine refurbishing the axle if not i know i guy which replaces the bearings so ill take it down to him.

Haven't updated for a while as not much as gone on due to me being skint. Wheels are fitted and i am going to refurbish the axle some time in the week when i get a couple of free days.

These pictures are with 20mm spacers all round, took the 20mm off of the front but left them on the back.

Thinking of lifting the back up when i change the bearings, as the beam i brought is fairly low.

Refurbed the axle but dint take any decent pictures as I was fairly busy all day. So much nicer to have the back end not creaking every time someone gets in the back.

Never went in the end, just looking for a reasonably price RR.
Ordered loads of stuff for the new charge cooler, started insulating the manifold, turbo and down pipe to reduce heat soak as much as possible.

Started insulating the turbo and manifold to reduce heat soak once the cooler is in.
Still need to take it to the rollers on stage one before i fit the cooler.

Got a hole bunch of pipe work and fittings ready to put it all together.

Going for black pipes when i fit the charge cooler, going to try fit it under the engine cover. cant wait to see what power we can get from it.

Yeah it will be interesting Smile what kind of power you expecting and what other plans have you got for future modifications?

#37: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Tue Apr 30, 2013 8:38 am
    ----
Not sure what boost the turbo will be able to run before if cooks. Might need to put an oil cooler on but hopefully not.

Might put bigger injectors in....

Maybe see if the VVT from the 1.6HDI is an easy modification. If not get bigger turbo from something else.

Thanks for thew interest and i have no idea what power i will get out of is hopefully 120 but i think that's a bit optimistic?

Well I'm very intrested in these engines to be honest ad I have one my self bit mines the 2.0 version Very Happy
Do you no what turbo you have?
A oil cooler would proberly be a wise choice if you pushing it mate Razz
It be interesting to see what it will produced.

#39: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Tue Apr 30, 2013 2:56 pm
    ----
My turbo is a KP35 about the size of my hand, not even joking !

What have you tuned your 2.0 hdi up to?

And with regards to the oil cooler ill have to look at the oil temps first, water temp never goes over 80 unless im in traffic.

#40: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: PezHdi, Location: Shrewsbury PostPosted: Tue Apr 30, 2013 4:42 pm
    ----
yeah i would look in to oil temp, as for the turbo im sure you can find an upgrade. Just depends on what the actual engine can take. Razz
Mine dosnt go much over 80 as well to be honest Very Happy
Its runing 120 Bhp and 292 Nm RR proven atm.

Got many more plans for it to be fair for a bigger turbo/hybrid, R70 pump, new injectors so on so on :]
But before all of that i need to replace top mounts and get it tracked up and reset the camber as iv just put 0.5 neg bushes in to wishbones.

#41: Re: 1.4 HDI charge cooler build HDI-tuning. lots of pictures Author: 14hdi PostPosted: Wed Aug 07, 2013 4:40 am

Not done an update in a very long time, not done much just bits and bobs

Heat wrapped the down pipe and insulated turbo/manifold

Also completely removed the egr (already removed from ecu). Used a blanking plate from eBay and then made a plug for the inlet manifold.

I then wanted to get rid of the air box in preparation for fitting the charge cooler, the only way I could get it out the way was to put a cone filter on. This meant that the header tank would have to be moved. The only option I could think of for moving the header tank was to use the tank from the 2.0 hdi and make up a bit of my own pipe work.

I then found a reducer to take the maf down to the compressor housing and mounted the cone filter with a metal bar going down to the bell housing.

Then needed to sort the oil breather out so made a oil catch tank up and managed to squeeze the pipe in behind the boost pipes.

Thanks for looking, hopefully have more updates soon.

great bits and pieces done on the car chap... all looking to be on the right lines. interested in seeing where this goes. much more difference with removing the air box and the box between the turbo and engine? what power of map are you running at the moment?

Sadly no progress. Moved to university so the car is parked up at home. Thinking about ditching the charge cooler idea and fit a twin pass intercooler to the front.

gutted Sad was looking forward to it. im back to uni shortly so i wont be doing anything till the summer.
Twin pass intercooler would be awesome but where the hell would you put it? and where would you put the piping?

That is the big question.... I have a few ideas but iv not measured it up yet.

If I went for the charge cooler the only place it could have been was sat on the exhaust manifold so not to great.

Ive been thinking about loads of possibilities, my current thought is to move the battery and coolent bottle and putting it there.

Iv already moved the coolant bottle but if you move the battery your going to end up with loads of pipe work so might as well get an intercooler.
