Engine cutting out when braking

#1: Engine cutting out when braking Author: Screwie PostPosted: Sun Jan 27, 2013 10:03 am

Hi all, I just bought an '04 206 1.4 two weeks ago and, every now and then, my car is cutting out as I come to a stop. It most often happens on the straight, coming down from 3rd or 4th gear, although it has happened while in 2nd on a slow corner too.

Now our area did have a lot of snow a week ago, and my new car sat under a couple of inches for a few days last weekend. I've noticed the problem since then so the snow/low temp might be a factor - or I might just not have noticed it before as I've only had it two weeks!

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

What are the revs on idle? Rpm, Steady/jittery
Does it do it every time you slow down/stop, or only when it's cold, or once it's warmed up?
this will sound silly but try to make it happen, but take note of all the info on the dash, more about it and we'll have a starting point Smile

Try this:-

Talks about cleaning idle stepper motor. Others will refer to it as Idle Control Valve (ICV) or Idle Air Control Valve IACV but they are all the same thing.

If you need more detail instruction buy a Haynes manual. Not perfect but very good for this type of attention and will pay for itself very quickly.

Sorry, I'll provide more info.

It certainly doesn't happen all the time, but on journeys where it does happen it can sometimes happen a lot. When it does happen the idle revs are definitely jittery.

When the car stalls the dash lights up the engine, battery and handbrake warnings, but these go away again after I restart the car. No other warnings.

The weather's warmed up now, but it is still happening with the same level of frequency. However I haven't noted the temp dials when this happens, I'll start to do that. I'll take it to a quiet carpark and try and make it fail too.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into getting the ICV cleaned then.
