That hard to do then, can you not take hub off and then knock them out with a socket of same outer size.
#4: Re: front wheel bearing Author: paulspug, Location: Spalding lincolnshirePosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:41 am ---- had someone do it with a vice ( cheap garage :/ )
ended up taking to peugeot
least they will make sure you are good before giving back.
all for the sake of saving pennys, i ended up paying more .
£80 peugeot charged , which tbh isnt tht bad.
your choice, just voicing what happened to me
#5: Re: front wheel bearing Author: bikesforme, Posted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:43 am ---- Does the bearing sit in the hub,you can buy a new front hub for £40 .Just thinking if u could buy new one with bearing in .
#6: Re: front wheel bearing Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:57 am ---- A brand new hub £40? Last time I looked they were like £200 from peugeot then a genuine peugeot bearing was £98.
but you can get a 2nd hand hub from a scrappy for about £40? But there's no telling what the life it's had, side impact ect
When I had my bearing done for £40 (that inckuded tge bearing)I got a peugeot replacement one 'motor quip' £20 and had a local garage press the old one out and the new one back in £20 then fitted the hub back on my self.
#7: Re: front wheel bearing Author: bikesforme, Posted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:19 am ---- Looked in ebay and there is a motor factors selling brand new hubs for £40. Does the bearing sit in the hub. Thanks
#8: Re: front wheel bearing Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:42 am ---- Yes. but what you need to ask is does it come with one already fitted if not you'll have to get one and get a garage to press it in.

Ok many thanks. Can you not bang one in using a socket the same outer size of bearing, thats how i have always done bearings on my bike and maybe little heat if very tight.
#10: Re: front wheel bearing Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:15 am ---- No. As you could crack the inner race and the bearing would go again in a couple of miles just pay a garage to press it in they'll only charge you about £10-£15
#11: Re: front wheel bearing Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:25 am ---- I've never had a problem hammering in a wheel bearing. I always use the old shell as the drift as I know it's the same size as the new bearing, so it won't damage the race.
Pressing it out and in is easier, but if you don't have access to a press then the hammer and drift method does fine. Garages used this method for years before presses came common place.
#12: Re: front wheel bearing Author: bikesforme, Posted: Sun Feb 03, 2013 7:13 am ---- Going to see if new one comes with bearing fitted ,not see point in putting secondhand one on. This car costing me a fourtne the short time i have had it.

#14: Re: front wheel bearing Author: Austin, Location: TelfordPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 7:28 am ---- had mine done 2 weeks ago, garage charged me £70, its just less hassle and messing about attempting to do it.

I bet they did not replace track rod end bolt, lower suspension arm balljoint clamp bolt and nut, brake caliper mounting bolts, driveshaft nut. All should be replaced once undone, i would rather do it myself clean everything and do the job like it should be done.
Dont see the point in spending garage prices on a old car, and you feel much better when you do all the work yourself, thats why these forums are so good for us home diy oil monkeys.
