#1: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:12 am ---- Guys.
The car is a 2005 1.4 16v.
I believe my track rod end is failing. When I grap the passanger front wheel at 3 and 9 and rock the wheel there is some play and a slight knocking sound.
When driving the car the steering feels slightly wobbly / jumpy at times. It is pulling slightly to the left and twitches at changes in the road.
Would you agree with my diagnosis and is this the best / correct part?

#2: Re: Track rod end? Author: 206gti_chris, Location: SussexPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:32 am ---- i had similar problems and had it checked by a mechanic and told me to get the drop links changed, so i got them done problem solved
#3: Re: Track rod end? Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:40 am ---- I would have thought with a drop link issue I would be hearing a noise while driving and especially going over bumps etc. my issue has no sound with it, except when I shake the wheel?
#4: Re: Track rod end? Author: Austin, Location: TelfordPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:52 am ---- could be a wheel bearing...
#5: Re: Track rod end? Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:53 am ---- Again wouldn't a bearing make noise while driving?
#6: Re: Track rod end? Author: Austin, Location: TelfordPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:08 pm ---- mine only made a noise when turning to the right, fine in straight line.
#7: Re: Track rod end? Author: usher, Location: northallertonPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:08 pm ---- drop link mine needed tightening by 1/8th a turn

#9: Re: Track rod end? Author: richpowell91, Location: Melton Mowbray LeicestershirePosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:36 pm ---- Get someone too look at the track rod end and also the lower arm balljoint, as you shake the wheel, it should be fairly obvious to see where the play is.

Ok will do that tomorrow. Thanks. Just don't want to replace a part that Is not worn.
#11: Re: Track rod end? Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:43 pm ---- Have you confirmed inner or outer?
Is there play in the bottom arm? Is the wheel bearing failing?
More checks are required
#12: Re: Track rod end? Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:46 pm ---- I think my best bet is to take it to the garage and ask them to check it all out. I will then fix what they find.
#13: Re: Track rod end? Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:55 pm ---- Its your choice, but if you are 100 percent checking at 9 to 3 and can 'feel' play it will be a track rod joint.
To confirm which one you will need a second person to see where it is, if not place your hand over the outer joint to feel for play then the inner in the gaitor.
If you still cant feel it pull down on the track rod as close to the inner gaitor as possible and move the wheel about at the points (3-9) and see if the play has disapeared. If it has, inner, if not outer
Simples

That sounds straight forward. I will have a look after work tomorrow. If I am still not sure i will get the garage to double check.
#15: Re: Track rod end? Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:00 pm ---- Fair play dude, i would personally rape a peugeot main stealers for a FREE VHC but decline all work afterwards
Free health check on your car with no price, win win?
#16: Re: Track rod end? Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 10:53 am ---- So I have just been to the garage and they have confirmed there is play in the track rod end. They also said there is slight play in the lower arm back bush.
I am going to order two track rod ends and replace both. They have not been done before. So I thought best to replace both.
I am unsure what to do with the lower arm back bush. Can I replace just the bush or is it the whole arm?
Thanks
#17: Re: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 12:58 pm ---- Replace the lower arm. If you don't you will get tyre wear and that will soon get to cost of replacing lower arm.
I have used the registration mark from my daughters 1.4 8V car and think the cheapest reasonable quality you will get is from buypartsbuy as follows:-
These are QH parts and that is a long (1947) established UK company.
Thanks for that.
If I put my car in it gives me a price of £30 / arm.
I have rang my local auto parts place. They can do two track rod ends and two lower arms for £78 inc vat.
At that price am going to get all parts on Thursday and change them this weekend. Job done then.
#19: Re: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 1:30 pm ---- Get four wheel alignment done when the parts are fitted.
Do not bother with two wheel.
The four wheel will take into account where your rear wheels are pointing (they won't be where Peugeot intended - they never are) and make adjustment at the front for that.
Even though you are on a far more accurate machine you should only pay for adjustments nmade so the price will be the same as tracking £35(ish.)

#22: Re: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 4:04 pm ---- Depends which Kwik Fit but I haven't seen one yet with good kit but I always avoid Twit Fit. Maybe they have improved to try to catch up with others. Even if it is good kit a poor operator can still mess it all up. The best kit is made by Beissbarth with Hunter not far behind; as what kit they have.
When they (who ever that is) does the alignment watch to see if they check all suspension components for wear before doing the alignment.
A good operator will check the suspension first and if there is wear advise you of that and recommend to you that it is not aligned until it is repaired. Very few do that; it may be management pressure to generate income or it might be poor training.

I would not trust kwik fit to change a bulb!
When I put my nimrods on the car they came with 4 used tyres. Between 20mph and 40mph I was getting a horrible noise from the front left.
I stopped by kwik fit for them to put it on the ramp and check nothing was rubbing. All they found wrong was I needed new discs and pads. (I already knew this and this was not what I asked them to do.)
They then told me the new alloys needed different bolts and the noise was one bolt going to far in and rubbing on the disc!! This did not even make sense!
I took the car home checked the wheel myself and found the tyre to be unevenly worn. Swapped it to the back noise gone!
Never again will I go to TWIT FIT as KandL puts it!

#25: Re: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: Tolkienfan001, Location: SpaldingPosted: Wed Feb 06, 2013 3:06 am ---- Thanks for the offer. Just bought two for £15.00 BNIB.
#26: Re: Track rod end? Been to garage update 05-02-13 Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Wed Feb 06, 2013 1:28 pm ---- If you had an Alfa 147 or 156 you would let Twit Fit fit the headlight bulbs. Double jointed and sliced hands is the only way to do it.
Second thought = no. They wouldn't seat them properly and I would have rubbish beam pattern.
