#1: Gti 138 battery start up power Author: Ben.M, Location: SuffolkPosted: Wed Feb 13, 2013 8:39 am ---- Basically I've just got myself a Gti, the battery went dead the first night I had it but tbh I think that was something the seller wasn't telling me about the battery.
I replaced it with the one that was in my old 1.1L which has a start up power of 400A, is that enough for a 2.0L engine like in the Gti? It just sounds like the battery is struggling to turn the engine over. I does it, but only just!
Thanks

The one I replaced it with is at 12.60V and as I said before, just about does it.

but i guess your problem is in the starter motor, not the battery.

One common mode of failure for batteries (lead-acid) are that the voltage can seem fairly OK when not stressed, but when you try to draw a big current from them (as when that solenoid on the starter clicks shut) the voltage collapses and the starter won't turn.
A battery in this state (or on the way to it)often also has a large self discharge rate. Ie it might work fine if the car is a daily driver that sees reasonable distances, but if you leave it a couple of days it might not be enough left to start the car.
The smaller battery from a 1.1 (probably 44/45 Ah) might be enough, at least for a while, if the charging system of the car is otherwise OK, the car doesn't do short journeys, and the car normally starts quickly - but the endurance if the car is hard to start is less, especially in cold weather; in short, slimmer margins... I'd go for a new properly sized one.
BTW, how old is the battery from the 1.1?

Just looked it up and the 1.1L's battery is 40AmH, only a year old I think.
Ok, I had no idea that could happen mtempsch, I'm really hoping its the battery that's the problem but I'll update this post in the morning regarding weather it starts or not :/
Thanks for your help guys!

Thanks
