Ok I've just had my car serviced and have received the invoice of all the work done 2 weeks later, because their system was down. On the invoice it says 4 plugs and an air filter were supplied by them (and assumed replaced), is this always done in a car service because I only had them changed last year.. to a k&n air filter and bosch super 4 spark plugs, now I think they replaced it with the factory parts?
#2: Re: Service Author: TheGTIlad, Location: LeedsPosted: Fri Feb 15, 2013 5:36 pm ---- It all depends on what service you asked them to do on your car mate, they'res three types of services. One is a standard oil and oil filter change. Then there is the next service up which is the oil, oil filter, and air filter change. And then there is the full service which is the service you have been provided with (oil, oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs changing).
If you want all the old parts back, ask the garage if they still have them. there's a chance that they have put the parts to one side, but they'res also a possibility they have disposed of them. Worth asking though if they still have them if you still want them.
#3: Re: Service Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Fri Feb 15, 2013 5:48 pm ---- I simply asked for a service (not full) to get rid of that spanner and service what the car needs, it did not need the air filter and spark plugs replaced so why would they replace what doesn't need to be replaced? I want more than the old parts back, I want my money back! It doesn't sound or feel like the plugs or filter has been changed, better not see that factory junk air filter in there. Sort this with them on Monday, really annoyed!!

You asked for a service both of those items are service items, if you did not want them to be replaced you should have specified before handing the keys over.
#5: Re: Service Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 1:27 am ---- Usually a service is like oil and filters and sometimes coolant but usually plugs are the next service grade up plugs should last on a normal car for a good 2-3 years 2bf. Did you have your K&N warning sticker on your air box?

If you wanted to get rid of the spanner light, why not reset it yourself.
Officially, you still own the parts they removed and you should have been offered them back. Realistically, the garage will have binned them as they took them off.
Both you and the garage are at fault for the work the carried out, you just asked for a service, which to most people would be oil, filters and plugs. If you had asked for the job lot, then they would have checked brakes, coolant, suspension etc. The garage are partly at fault because they didn't specify the work that they were going to carry out, but then again you didn't specify what you wanted doing.
Before getting any work carried out, it is always better to get a written quote. This forms the basis of the contract. Since it was most probably verbal, and no one actually specified what work was required, then the chance of you getting anything back is slim.
Unfortunately it will have to be put down as a learning experience. You could always quote the Theft Act to them, but they would get out of it because there was no dishonesty involved on their part.
Out of interest how much did they charge for the service? I'm guessing they did oil change and replaced the oil filter, plugs, air filter and pollen filter. Was it a dealer or independent garage?

To me an oil and filter change isnt a service, its simply an oil and filter change, and i change my spark plugs every 6 months along with everything else.
#9: Re: Service Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:08 am ---- The garage must have been blind to bin a K&N filter. It will probably be on Ebay now.
As for the plugs the garage wouldn't have known that they'd been changed the service before.
#10: Re: Service Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:22 am ---- Every 6 months for plugs Bit OTT imo for a car that's used for standard use, my service intervals are
1x year
flush and change Coolant
Gear box oil
Brake fluid
Spark plugs
Fuel filter
2x year
Oil and filter
Clean and re-oil air filter
I have been going this for nealy 6years of owning the car, before and after the engine upgrades.
Every one to there own.
I am think of changing my oil though do any of you use the total quartz 9000? Last edited by spike_202 on Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:07 am; edited 2 times in total
#11: Re: Service Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:29 am ---- I just checked and the k&n air filter is in there
So they did for sure overcharge. The air filter and plugs are only 10 months old.
They charged £500.04
Supplied by me:
Front and rear pads / discs replaced
Track rod end replaced
Parts supplied by garage:
Rear pads.......................... 38.50 (apparently front pads didn't fit?)
Fuel filter..........................14.50
Plugs..........................32.00
Drop link..........................27.10
Rocker cover gasket..........................38.50
Air filter..........................12.50
Oil.......................... 31.50
Oil filter..........................9.50
£212.12 labour
£204.10 parts
£83.34 vat
And they done something to the steering rack, when they released the vehicle the joint was incorrectly positioned so I had to hold it 45 degrees left to drive straight. They replaced something on the steering and kept it in for the 3rd day. (not mentioned on invoice ? )

The track rod end is part of the steering and replacing this will cause the steering wheel to become misaligned. It should be straight again if they adjust the tracking properly.
You will have to check the plugs, but TBH a one month old plug can look like a 12 month old plug , so they wouldn't have known they were only 10 months old. I wouldn't complain about having new plugs in though. Depending on which type of plug was fitted will determine the price. £8 a plug is cheap for a decent make, but expensive if they have fitted crap.
Did you ask them to do the drop link and rocker cover gasket? It's beginning to look more than just a simple service.
#13: Re: Service Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:56 am ---- I told them to call and quote me first to authorize the repairs but they didn't. I am not bothered about this so long the work was needed to be done. As they charged air filter but didn't fit it, they could of done the same for the plugs and other filters?
#14: Re: Service Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:07 am ---- If they didn't quote you for the repairs, then you don't have to pay. They took the risk and did the work off their own back. No contract was in place. At the end of the day, it will all come down to the conversation you had with them when you phoned and booked in and when you dropped the car off.
Have a look at the link I posted earlier. There is all the legislation links in there for consumers rights and a few sample letters on what you need to put when making the complaint.
I would only be paying for the work that I had asked them to do and which was authorised. More fools them for releasing the car without taking payment first. Even when the system is down, 99.9% of places can raise a manual invoice. I reckon you could easily get over £100 knocked off for them doing work that wasn't agreed. This will more than compensate for the plugs.
