remove spare wheel cage - grommet

#1: remove spare wheel cage - grommet Author: supersai101, Location: Buckley PostPosted: Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:39 pm

The spare wheel seems useless so I want to remove it from the car and replace with a bottle oftyre weld. When I remove the cage the cage hook is all loose and no longer water tight. Is there a grommet I can get to plug the hole if I completely remove that hook?

Thanks in advance.

Of course you can get grommets to fit...

measure the hole then buy a grommet that size

make sure you keep a spare tire. does seem useless but never know when your tire goes then it wont seem so useless. can never predict when or if it will happen. if not just keep one in the boot

I was thinking of measuring it, but thought someone might have done this already and know the exact size / has a link to one that fits perfectly. I took the spare out and put it up against a wheel on the car and its actually not the right size, the spare is much smaller in diameter.

Just to let you know if you have a gash in the tyre then tyre weld is useless. Just do what I did and get a 2pence piece and mastic it over the hole.

It's water tight and adds 2p to the value of your car Smile

The spare is useless anyway as its not the same size as the rest of the wheels, not sure if its even right for the car.

That 2p idea is actually very good! Might do that lol. thanks

Some tyre places won't replace a tyre if tyre weld has been used. They suggest you bin the wheel.

I carry a tin of tyre weld, but also have the spare wheel. The tyre weld is there as a last resort if the space saver can't get me to the nearest garage to fit a new tyre.

The other option you have is to get a spare alloy or steel wheel and put that in the cage, but the space saver is perfectly adequate to do the job it was designed for.

For a moment there, I thought you had used mastic and a 2p to cover a hole in the tyre.

Tyre weld = the perfect way to ruin a repairable tyre Whistle...

of course the spare is smaller, it's a space saver. It's not meant for driving on permanently, its supposed to just get you to the nearest garage. I replaced the space saver with a standard steel wheel though

I dont mean smaller as in the width of the wheel. I mean smaller in total diameter, so if that wheel was to be used, the car would have one corner dipped down. But im gonna go down the 2p and mastic route I think, well I may use an old plastic card instead of 2p but same idea. Not fussed about not having a spare as many cars these days don't come with them anyway, my rx8 only had a puncture repair kit which contains some kind of solution and a compressor which is basically tyre weld.
