Boot Lights Wont Switch Off!?
-> 206 Problems

#1: Boot Lights Wont Switch Off!? Author: sxibeast, Location: Milton Keynes PostPosted: Mon Feb 25, 2013 5:14 am

Morning everyone,

Has anyone ever had this before?

Recently (possibly due to cold weather) the battery on our 206 has been dying. Having jumped the old one many times i put a new one on.

Ever few days now, it needs a jump (though unfortunately it doesnt get to do many miles a week so possibly not charging up enough after a start?)!

Anywho, the other night i noticed the boot light was still on, even though the boot was shut (all doors shut) and the car was locked (with alarm on)!

I gave everything the generic wiggle to see if it was something there, but can only think its the boot light staying on and draining the battery?

Is the boot light switch mounted inside the boot itself (and could it have become dirty and prevent proper operation)?

Or is the boot light staying on a sign of an electrical issue further down the line?

Also, does anyone know what the draw on the battery should be if the car is switched OFF, and what the voltage across the terminals should be when the car is switched ON (i got around 14.2V when the car was on last test)?

Cheers!

Fault boot switch me thinks! If you cant find the switch then take bulb out and wait a few days see what happens.

Mercury tilt switch inside the tailgate operates the boot light.

Pull the plastic trim panel of the inside of the tailgate, the switch is pop riveted to the metal on the tailgate & has 1 wire going to it.

Cheers guys!

Bulb has been removed for the time being until i can get to the bottom of it!

I don't suppose you know whether the switch is something i can strip down (to a degree) and clean, or would it be a new unit?

should be able to clean it, failing that just by another from a 206 that is being broken!

Its a SEALED unit with MERCURY inside it, don't even think about taking it apart!

Don't f*** about with mercury as you can easily end up in a wooden box Wink

Certainly wouldn't crack it open to reveal the mercury, i was thinking more along the lines of connection cleaning etc if the unit is easy to pop out! Smile

Its pop riveted to the tailgate with 1 spade terminal connection for the wiring.

Cool thank you!

I shall dust off the drill at the weekend and get a replacement!

New switch is £4.74 including VAT from Peugeot / Citroen.

I take it you actually have tested the circuit to diagnose the switch as faulty then?

Cool thank you!

No not yet, but am assuming if the boot light stays on and nothing else does then this would be the issue (as i would assume the main interior light would stay on with it)?

Thinking about it, would the switch (or circuit for that matter) staying on cause the battery to be weak/drain overnight? Could it be a relay not switching somewhere?
