Every so often some of the hydrogen sulphide is released when you accelerate or put load onto the engine.
Try changing petrol stations for a while and make sure that the car is running properly to try and remove the issue of the fuel not burning effectively.
If you continue to put unburnt fuel into the catalyst, then it will fail prematurely.

Generally anything emissions wise can affect MPG, like lots of other things such as air filter,.oil filter, sparks etc. Usually a bad catalyst fails compression test.
