-> 206 Problems

#1: Need some help please! Author: Cazbumbaz PostPosted: Tue Mar 05, 2013 1:18 pm

Hiya, I have been the proud oener of my 206, 1.4lx auto since Novemeber, It is my first car, as I was a late starter, well in driving anyway..

Well tonight i was picking up the son from the trainstation, when i was sat with my foot on the brakes, waiting for him.. All of a sudden i heard this horrible noise coming from under the bonnet.. it sounded like somebody had thrown a spanner in .. but it carried on even after I had turned the engine off. Panicking, i phoned my hubby, who came to my rescue, and told me to switch the engine on. I did this, and for a matter of minutes it didnt do it.. He popped the bonnet and it made the noise. He said it sounded like the fan on the radiator was catching on something.?? ( sorry vacant look here!)

I also noticed the temperature gauge was going up..? It never normally does, as I only use it to travel to work and back.
He told me to turn my heater on full blast, and gradually the temperature gauge went down as I was driving. I got home safely... (it was like a sauna in the car!!) but no more noise....

I understand i have to take it in to the garage, but does the explanation my Husband give, sound like a viable one..?

THankyou for your help

Yup - if the temperature is up, the fan will continue running for a while after you turn off the engine in order to bring the temperature down a bit, so fits with your description of continued noise sfter engine shut off.

The bonnet catch is just by the radiator, opening the bonnet could move something and cause it to engage the blades.

This might all lead to a complete failure, or diminished capacity, of the cooling fan, causing the elevated temperature you experienced...

What year is your car??1998 or 1999??

Well if it's 1999 or even 2001,the cooling fan will keep going when you turn your engine off,but it's a later model,then the fan will stop by the min. you turn your car engine off,so take a look on the cooling fan ,you can see it clearly from the bumper grill,maybe something got in while your were waiting.

If the sound came back,and temp. of your engine goes up more than usual,then i think you have a faulty cooling fan,which needs to be replaced.

Sorry it is a 2001... but the very loud grinding noise, that continues, that could be the fan failing.?
Thankyou

Get your husband to remove the front grill ( its only clipped & screwed on ) & have a look at the cooling fan.
