Hyas!

Couple of days felt and heard engine pulsing when in 2nd or 3rd, especially when cold, and always around 2k rev. Also more noticeable when uphill (but mybe it's just me Smile

It feels like car's slightly vibing back and forth due to that judder, and engine sound makes pulsing noise. All quiet when not in gear, did even handbrake+2nd standstill test up to 2k rev - all quiet..

Hopefully not cambelt Smile

Cheers for hints, where to look

I'd think you're safe in regards to the cambelt - I don't see how that could cause a problem like this!

Mine does similar but is most noticeable when it's cold - is yours any different depending on whether it's upto temperature or not? There's a slight incline just up the road and in the morning you can hear the car pulsing. Mine only seems to do it at a constant amount of throttle - if I put more or less in it doesn't seem to do it.

I've tried googling the problem and it seems fairly common but nobody has come back and ever said whether they've fixed it or not! As mine does it most when cold I think it rules out the lambda sensor so I suspect either the MAP or TPS to be possibly on their way out but I'm sure there could be other causes too.

As it more or less disappears once warm I'm leaving it till my car's next trip to the garage which (fingers crossed) should be in a month or so for a service - if I find anything out I'll let you know :-).

current suspects: misifire, diagnostics needed (anyone could lend peugeot planet in Bristol+Wiltshire area?) earthing on control el.components.
Tomorrow bringing to garage Smile
yes, only when engine is cold. Doesnt depend on weather, but only engine temperature.

Thanks Jake 86, I will add MAP and TPS to suspect list Smile will hint my mechanic tomorrow. Have you had the fault codes read?

My car behaves exactly as you described, and as I tried to describe too Smile

Hope we will win. Since when have you had it?

Local garage connected up diagnostics, which spat a fault code about EGR valve.
They want to replace it, £92 for a new EGR valve from Peugeot dealer. The garage claims that then pulsing will go away.

In addition to occasional pulsing, garage noted a louder-than-usual engine noise (I noted it too quite some time ago, but never addressed it more seriously), they suggested to worry about injectors. Their diagnostic fault codes were not conclusive enough though, so for thorough injectors' inspection they want to quote my arm and a leg.

I don't know anymore, how overlapping/related the pulsing and loud engine noise problems are.

Also, during up to 3 weeks before pulsing noise appeared, I saw an decrease of MPG (from 42 to 30) ! But that happened during the time when battery was dying, and I also changed my commute to faster roads (70 mph) and shorter journeys (20min) -- that's why I blamed MPG drop for. When get my car back, will revert to old route and have new battery fitted to recheck my theory.

Cheers,

I have had all the same issues as those listed above. Took it to my local mechanic, who plugged it in & it told us it was the 'coolant temperature sensor'. I don't completely understand but it apparently messes up the fuel/air mixture hence the suddenly crap MPG

Hi Daykes,

That's great news! Tell us if the problem'll go away.
Does the engine pulse as well?
Still no change for me, still shakes when cold:
* fitted a new battery
* gone back to old commute
* MPG went from 29 up to 36, still not as it used to be (42)
* blamed a cheap(=crap) Tesco diesel (went there once by mistake), now fuelled up a better quality
* poured in a bottle of injector cleaner
* disabled EGR valve

but the engine pulsing/shaking still when cold morning (and evenings), noted it should be around +3 degrees approx.

Let's get down to the bottom of this Smile too many suspects already, but at least successfully ruling some out

Funnily enough my car is booked into the garage on Tuesday to have the coolant temperature sensor changed. I'll let you know if that solves the problem! If not, hopefully they'll be able to get to the bottom of it whilst it's with them.

sledge - My car is fixed!! ALL of the symptoms have gone. No pulsing, engine MUCH quieter, steady idling & fuel consumption is back where it should be (refulled & did a 76miles trip some town & motorway driving).

I had the 'green' coolant sensor, which is located under the air filter box (in the 1.6 16v XSI) replaced. It was £17 from EuroCar Parts. It is really easy to change & I would have done it myself but I had no labour charge to pay anyway!

Really hope this cheap fix helps anybody with the same problems.

Amazing news, quite incredible how a cheap sensor might improve MPG, reduce judder and silence the engine!

It might be harder for me to figure out if shaking is gone due to warmer weather Smile But I'm calling Peugeot dealer (R&D) tomorrow Smile

Cheers!!

Tomorrow picking up the blue 3-wire coolant temperature sensor and the seal (for 2.0 HDi) from Peugeot dealer (Robson&Day)

For the fiddly ones among us - could you tell me the resistance across the 3 wires of a working sensor during different temperatures?

I'm going to probe around with multimeter to see if it's really the sensor gone wrong (if my sensor's fine, hope R&D accept returns of unfitted sensors Wink

Cheers,

Thank you all -- it worked! Sorry for long delay.

I did some tests on the old (faulty) sensor and the new one:

Temperatures tested: from room temperature (~22), then up to 36.6, then let it settle for a bit again at a room temperature

Resistance measured between pins numbered (in kΩ, thanks V9977 ;)), when facing them latch on the top: 1, 2, 3
(it makes sense to you to ref those, only if you have a 2.0 HDi with only one [blue] temperature sensor socketed into the thermostat housing, being between engine and the battery)

Code::
Sensor Pins 22 ℃ 36.6 ℃ 22 ℃
 New 2-3 3.75kΩ 4.73kΩ
 Old 2-3 2.66kΩ 1.91kΩ 2.25kΩ

 New 1-3 6.43kΩ 5.45kΩ
 Old 1-3 6.86kΩ 5.33kΩ

 New 1-2 1.95kΩ 1.74kΩ 1.83kΩ
 Old 1-2 4.26kΩ 3.56kΩ 6.24kΩ

This clearly shows that pin 2 is giving wrong results, and that is most probably the cable going to the ECU for air/fuel mixture. Where as the other pin goes to the temperature gauge and shows correct values..

Why couldn't Peugeot compare these two output temperatures and indicate it amongst fault codes? My fault codes didn't show anything like that suspicious.

Cheers,

Can you remember who your 'local mechanic' was? I'm looking for someone in the Ledbury area to try to sort out a 206 with various dashboard lights on.
