#1: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:09 pm ---- Please dont judge me!!
I foolishly put jump leads on the wrong way round and now nothing is happening. It is my 180 so there is no help at all with manuals etc.. So far I have tried...
Checking all fuses - as best I can in the dark
Check earth strap
Tried jumping directly to the terminals (bypassing the battery)
It is like something like a fuse has tripped but I cannot see where. I think it is odd that nothing blew.. unless I am missing something. I know of the fuse boxes adjacent to the battery and the one by the steering column, and I can see nothing wrong...
What am I missing??
Thanks

#3: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:16 pm ---- Any way of testing/knowing?? Surely I would have SOMETHING, even interior lights?
The battery was completely flat... so I was hoping that the charge didnt get so far
#4: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:17 pm ---- would this have tripped and thus need resetting??
#5: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: RossC413, Location: AberdeenPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:18 pm ---- fried battery i think take it off try charge it, if it dont hold a charge battery is dead, how long you leave the jump leads on for?
#6: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:19 pm ---- They were on for maybe 30 seconds before starting the donor car... then when it didnt start, I immediately saw fault and disconnected
I am charging battery now - but surely jumping direct to terminals would at least work??
Thanks guys.. I'm really worried for my baby here!!
#7: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: RossC413, Location: AberdeenPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:21 pm ---- think youll just have to wait and see.

#10: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:32 pm ---- only a jap battery with wrong terminals... cant even stretch the charger to the car to do it that way...
#11: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: Uz, Location: No Man's LandPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:37 pm ---- It wouldn't matter if it's a fried battery because your not getting anything even if you go directly to the terminals themselves. I'm not sure how you test the BSI...but there is a few threads about on here which will tell you.
#12: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 3:40 pm ---- I am thinking more along the lines of... cheap jump leads... 30 seconds on inverted polarity.. possibly fried jump leads...??
Don't know - just want to be able to sleep tonight!!

Author: rttam, Location: devonPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 4:29 pm ---- had a few customers at work do this. ecu/bsi is normally ok because there are so many circuit protections not sure where off the top of my head but most cars have a main bolt in fuse like 100amp or something to protect against this. it wont be in the fuse box with the blade fuses will be either tucked away under the dash or underneath the main fuse box or something like that. il have a quick look on our data at work tommorow and see if they have got one and if so where it is.

Maxi fuses under the fuses in the engine compartment. I'd check those too. but you have put a live where it shouldn't, so who knows what problems there might be.
Someone else did this not long ago, so do a quick search. He didn't have many problems tbh.
#16: Re: Connected jump leads the wrong way round - I have nothing !! Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu Mar 07, 2013 5:10 pm ---- Thank you to all... I did a search for the BSI and it was quite likely, however, as luck would have it, the £4.99 jump leads appeared to have saved the day. Did a resistance check and the cooper must have burnt out. Put the battery back on after an hours charge and she burst back into life.
A very close shave and a lesson learnt. But if nothing else - I think there is a lot to be said for cheap jump leads here! They burn out before the charge ruins your car
Thank you to everyone for your help. You know a good owners club when you get this much response in such a short space of time.

You cant even change a bulb with the battery connected cause it could kill it.. lucky man

Total b******s, its perfectly safe to change any of the bulbs fitted on a 206 with the battery still connected.
