Exchanging the speedometer

Hi all

I hope you can help a Danish guy out Smile

I have a 206 Gti from 2000.
My speedo has died and the mechanic at the Peugeot dealership says that they need to exchange it. I've read that it could be a sensor on the gearbox but they say its not that.
They want a ridiculous price for fixing it so I'm seeking your help to maybe fix it myself.
Reading on the forum I've found out that my model need a preplex speedo (it has two wires I believe). I have found a guy who is willing to sell me one for a good price. Does it have to be from another Gti or will anyone work?
If you have any advice or comments it is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Sean

Is the gearbox connector definately OK?

Does it go beep-beep-beep when you open the door slightly and start gently rolling the car (door-open alarm).

@ v9977 I just checked and there is no sound if I drive with the door open. Does that indicate that it might be the sensor on the gearbox then?

@ iainlovatt
Thanks for the offer but since I live in Copenhagen I think the postage might make it too expensive. Do you know if a speedo from a non-gti model will work?

If everything else on there is working fine and no beep-beep you've left the door open when it's moving then I would think so.

It started when the speedo needle would just go up and down sometimes. Then at one point it kept going up until it came all the way around to zero. Now it's just back at zero and stays there. It vibrates slightly sometimes. Any advice how I can find out what's wrong? The Peugeot mechanic seemed sure it was the whole speedo that needed to be changed and it would cost a lot of money... I've found pretty cheap used one that I can get I just don't know if it will work since its not a gti model. Is there a way to figure out wether it's the speedo or the sensor that's broken without changing the speedo?

If the replacement speedo looks the same and the number of plugs round the back are the same then yes it shuld work fine.

Watch the milage though because that is stored on a chip in the speedo unit.
It will show whichever is greater (replacement or old milage) when you change it.
