Which Diesel engine?

Hi guys, I'm back again, after a brief jolly in a mk5 golf I'm on a 206 ting again! Boom

I sold my 206gti because it just cost too much in petrol, bought a golf tdi, now I want to sell that and get a hdi. German stuff just isn't as much fun!

Obviously I'm gonna want it remapping, would it better to start off with the solid 2.0 hdi with its solid flywheel and 90bhp or go for the 110bhp 1.6 dodgy turbo diesel? Anyone actually experienced any ongoing problems with them?

I work for a well known motor factor so I know the issues with oil flow/turbo feed pipe blockages etc. is it safer to start with the older engine? Or does good genuine service history indicate a healthy turbo?

Have you got a 1.9 105? True it's as flat as a fart, but a simple remap takes it to 150BHP and 320Nm. Still not exciting but much better car to drive. I have this engine in the wifes SEAT.

Avoid the 1.4 HDi as it'll definitely be boring for you, great little engine but just not as nice to drive as the 2.0, and has a horrible gearbox.

Otherwise it's a good job you work in a motor factors if going back to a 206.

True story bro!

The golf could be faster, but I've got a thing about 206's, I get all moody when I see a badly modified one, or even badly looked after one. And there so fun, little pocket rockets with the right power!

Sorry yea, it is the 105 tdi engine. Only thing I enjoy on it is the 'tsshhhhh' when u change gear at the tight revs

The 1.9 is literally gutless as standard, it's essentially a detuned mk4 PD engine.
I had a 2.0 which once remapped was very nice and torquey, however I have a petrol now and don't miss it at all.

Back on topic..I'd look at the 2.0HDi, I have a friend that had one and it was nice to drive as standard. The 206 is a nimble little car which with a few handling mods will go well.

I've just read about a remap from a guy called Steve on here for like £80 for the 2 litre. Sounds like a good bet. What sorta mileage do they do top end?

Not sure mate, I had my 1.4 done at RS Tuning and for the 5 years thereafter it got a constant 63-68MPG on the wife's commute, although that's not at high speed!

Wouldn't have taken you long to do a search that would bring up all the threads highlighting the numerous problems the 1.6 has.

Well I'm gonna go balls out and get a hdi gti. The amount of miles I do, approx 15k a year, pound for pound nothing's gonna be as much fun! And I've seen basic remaps pushing 135bhp, that's budget gti figures.

Just gonna make sure it's been well serviced and not already had a turbo/EGR failure. Can't wait!

Ps anyone want to buy a golf?

I remember a time when most people were w**king over the 1.6 HDi, how thing's have changed.

Your Golf, if reasonably priced, will sell within a week of being on Autotrader
