#1: car tax up AGAIN Author: chris_h, Location: ukPosted: Wed May 08, 2013 3:56 pm ---- For the 5th year running, those greedy pigs in parliament have decided my wage has risen by soooo much they can ask another 5 pound of me for my 1.1 engine, which is well known for its sheer power and its profound ability to kill polar bears while sparing the rest of earths inhabitants.
I thought that inexperienced, unqualified p***k of a chancellor had promised the peasants a road tax freeze in the march budget??? it Now stands at 140 quid a year, for a 206!!!!!

Monetary wise the depreciation on older cars is a lot less than newer cars. In fact the older the car gets the more it slows down, stops, or even reverses. So 'road tax' can easily be one of the biggest costs of motoring compared to depreciation.
For example my old car was worth about £1800 this year, about £100 less than last year. So with 'road tax' at £300 I paid £200 MORE than what I lost in depreciation, hardly 'a small cost' regardless of what you compare it too.
Imagine those percentages on a new car-
Lets say a new car looses £2000 in its first year (most new cars will EASILY loose that), you would have to be paying around £6000 on 'road tax' to be paying pro rata the same as the owner of an older car, so it's not hard to see why people think we're being ripped off.

I agree with the first part of your statement, although its relevance is questionable, but not the 2nd as its relative to an individuals car, disposable income, wages, & even the empathy they have for the newer car owner & the money they're loosing to depreciation. After the fuel costs the £30 a month 'road tax' was the biggest cost to me.
