#1: looking for advice on purchasing this 206 Author: Stanler PostPosted: Mon May 13, 2013 6:37 am

Hey guys, New here, just looked through the what to look for when buying a 206 and found it very helpful! Just wanted to get some opinions on a car I'm going to look at tonight, this seemed like the best place to ask! This is the car in question autotrader.co.uk/class...new/page/1 any insight at all is appreciated, I think I can get the price down a bit but overall what's the thoughts on it?

Looks decent. I like the colour & alloys. Check the condition of the upholstery (no photos), and do a proper HPI on it (if the seller hasn't already got one).
Mileage (10 years old) is a bit high tbh.

Get as much discount and as much warranty as you can!

Welcome to 206info! Waving o/

What would the yellow light on the dash be?

Thats the only real thing that concerned me looking at the pics.

Is it the ABS or Airbag light?

You sir, have quite the eye! I can barely see the dash nevermind a yellow light, I will make sure I give it a proper checking over. I didn't think the mileage was too bad for a 10 year old diesel but I've been known to be wrong. HPI check I will make sure I do, obviously need to make sure the cambelt has been done semi recently. Anything else to be wary of?

Thanks for the welcome and the quick replies.

What's that showing to the left of the MFD as well?

I was hoping you knew that.

If it was me I'd contact the seller and ask what the light is and what its saying on the display.

Also have you google'd the seller?

I've had a bit of experience with "company's" that only allow you to view by appointment...it normally ends in tears and their warranties normally mean jack s**t.

Be careful.

Thanks guys, I'm going to look at it tonight as its only down the road so to speak.

I'll make sure I grill him about the lights that are on and stuff.

I'll give them a quick google now as well, the google search turned nothing up but I am on my phone. Will try again on the computer before I set off to look tonight

With the position of it, I'd say it's the ABS warning light. Airbag lights are further left.

In that case I personally wouldn't bother with it, I'm sure you can get plenty of 206's for that money now.

OR ask for a new mot on it as they would have to fix the ABS to get a pass Wink

Then again it was only tested 11 days ago Laughing

I got my car with an MOT for one of those types of places.......no brakes, 3 bold tyres.

The only reason I bought mine was because I knew the history.

Don't suppose there is any chance that light is just the rear fog is there? Or is it not high enough up

Plus the front fogs would be on to so the green front fog warning lamp would be showing on the cluster next to the yellow rear fog warning lamp.

How did you get on with this?

Went to view and the gent seemed genuine, but I guess they always do. Said the abs light was due to the battery being flat and having to get it jumped to charge.
I'm going back down today with a mechanic to have it looked over. Other than the abs light the car was near perfect

Wouldnt put me off if its was just a abs light, chances are it a sensor or a split ring!

Good way to screw up the car then.

Is it an actual trader selling the car? If it is, at least you have your statutory rights to fall back on if there is a more major problem.

How could it screw the car up?

My mate's got one of those and the only problems he's had is with the EGR valve triggering the engine management light. Make sure the clutch is good too, it cost him £300 for a new one fitting. Other than that it's just the usual wear and tear things that aren't expensive he says.

Something to do with the ECU and things going pop.

Did you buy it?

#25: Re: looking for advice on purchasing this 206 Author: Stanler PostPosted: Thu May 16, 2013 4:29 am

Sorry for the late reply, yeah I purchased the car and I'm loving it thoroughly.

Quick question though, if indeed the car had been jumped to charge the battery could this have blown a fuse for the abs? Causing the light to be on. I've rung the garage and they've agreed to look at the car for me over the light next week, just wondered if it was worth me sticking a couple of new fuses in to see if its as simple as that?

#26: Re: looking for advice on purchasing this 206 Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, Lancashire PostPosted: Thu May 16, 2013 4:54 am

More likely to be a cracked ring or a knackered sensor.
The garage should sort it for you, but buying a car (or any item) knowing that there is a fault can affect your rights, and the seller doesn't have any obligation to fix the fault.

By jump starting a 206, you can damage the BSI and ECU units. Some people will say that they have jump started their car and never had a problem. I'd prefer to air on the side of caution and avoid the £600+ bill from Peugeot.

Ah right thanks for the info. I had a word with him about the light being on and he's agreed to getting it sorted for me.

So fingers crossed.
