#1: Horror on Motorway.. Spring snaps Author: Daytona600, Location: BelfastPosted: Mon May 13, 2013 10:54 am ---- i had bought some spax shocks and springs a couple of years ago off here. last week doing 70 the car suddenly lost control and in mid lane it decelerated in seconds. Luckily I was able to pull onto hard shoulder.
The spring had corroded and snapped. It came over the support on the strut and clamped down on the wheel. It was towed home for £150.. ouch
When I was able to inspect the passenger side found the spring had also corroded and was hanging loosely.

Question: Do you advise I just get the lowering springs 40mm spax for the strut or buy a whole new kit? the car is lowered back end via torsion bar
If a new setup what would you recommend bearing in mind cost. Anyone recommend anything for around the £250 mark? Or any ideas on what I can do next to stay safe and keep costs down.
Would be really appreciated.

Just get new springs and dampers, they whole lot looks buggered
For £250 I would get a second hand B8 + faulkner / eibach setup but if you want to buy new you're limited to stuff like apex, spax (again) etc - I just consider them all similar in performance but probably aren't

The fact that the spring on both sides had shattered was the most puzzling. Both had rotted away. I notice how Spax just give 2 years warranty whilst Apex for example give five years. these were just 1 year when I got them 4 years ago so in total 5 years use.
Cheers for recommendation of 2nd hand. Very hard to find good used suspension parts though for the 1.4hdi and not much on offer on this site either at the minute.
If anyone has had good experience with the lesser brands let me know.
Many thanks in advance

Previously unheard of except being silly over road bumps I believe. Did they really break together and at the same time for no reason while cruising on the motorway? Go on you can own up to us.
Yes they are definitely rotted but for both to go at exactly the same time, as before, is unheard of.

#9: Re: Horror on Motorway.. Spring snaps Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Mon May 13, 2013 3:59 pm ---- Surely heavily corroded springs would be an advisory on the MOT?
#10: Re: Horror on Motorway.. Spring snaps Author: Daytona600, Location: BelfastPosted: Mon May 13, 2013 4:47 pm ---- Tyres legal on one side, on the other now not legal due to spring rubbing ferociously.
And no what could I possibly be doing in a 1.4hdi van with computer equipment in the back? Its my livelihood so no way going any speed...
It may have been that once one went the other side felt the pressure.. I don't know
anyways am asking for advice on which suspension to get not play 'spot the bald tyre'
