Damn 180 steering! Help, please...

#1: Damn 180 steering! Help, please... Author: gpvecchi, Location: Italy PostPosted: Fri May 17, 2013 2:10 pm

There's a problem I can't solve with my RC (GTI 180).
Sometimes steering is soft and perfect, sometimes it becomes hard to pull and when turning (both slowly both fastly) it judders a lot!
Lower arms and all other joints were changed; I assume it is something related to steering pump (it has been changed 5 years ago because of a leakage) but I can't understand why sometimes is good and sometimes is not.
Help, please!

When it becomes hard to pull, is it when you pull the wheel hard and fast?

In particular, but even if turn slowly in a crossroad.
Even if I stay still and I turn from one side to the other.

As you know that 206 RC have variable steering assistance. Steering will going harder after 4500 rpm and go slower again when rpm goes below 4000. I dont know exactly how is this working (i think its in inside pump) but maybe your problem is related with that one. I know our steering pump is simple mechanic one instead of electric pas pump but maybe your problem source is pump.

Thanks, usually pump problem are not intermitting. I think that it could be something related to steering rack that creates overpressure on the steering pipes and make the valve discharge it.

If outside / ambient temp seems to make a difference as well, could be the steering valve in the rack in which case it's replacement rack time.

However, Schumi has a point with the pump if it's variable.

Update: I was still in neutral without brakes; I steered from center to left with A LOT of juddering; then I steered from full left to full right without juddering.
Then from full right to full left: no juddering at all... I'm mad about this thing!

Maybe one way round it is to fit a shorter belt bypassing the PAS pump. If the dodgy steering still continues with no power assistance then you know it's not a mechanical problem with the rack. It narrows it down slightly to a hydraulic problem.
There's a pressure sensor on the steering pipes. Does Planet Peugeot do more in depth scanning than a normal fault code reader? It might be able to see any surges in pressure.

Good idea, thanks! BTW, no P codes with PPS2000...

Yes it does.

Real time data.

Either your pump is shaged, or V-belt slipping big style.
Simple.
