15" Lightnings with a 185/55 R15 tyres

or

16" Nimrods with 195/45 R16 / 205/45 R16

All depends on what mood the frenchies were in on the day and also which side on 2001 it was built.

Be warned decent 185/55 15 tyres are getting harder to find & there expensive if you do find them.

Michelin is a now a no go & Goodyear only do 1 tyre in that size.

so a I right in thinking that 16s are the better option due to tyre size then?
at present it has 17s with 40 profile tyres and the ride is to harsh for me[iam old] so am looking for a smoother ride

A 2001 car should definitely have the 16" Nimrod/Ouragans on it. Most 2000/W plate cars had the 16" wheels too.

Well if they fitted the 16" wheels to most W platers then all X and Y plate cars should have them too.

I've found that if you want the latest sports type tyres you can sometimes struggle to get them in 16". I wouldn't want a normal tyre on a hot hatch. I'll be going for the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT next.

I've got a pair of the new Goodyear efficient grip performance to go on the back of the 206 later this week, they seem to get a good write up in many places.

I doubt they will last as long as a Michelin Pilot though.

Have you seen the wet braking distances between Eco tyres and normal ones? Even branded tyres are scary.
