#1: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: vmondude, Location: South WalesPosted: Tue Jun 11, 2013 3:54 pm ---- Ok so the other day getting in the car, my girlfriend and her sister were chattin away, quite loudly, and as we were ready to back off the drive I had a brain dead moment (probably because of the noise! lol) and I pulled the stick back into reverse, without even thinking about the clutch!!
First time in 13 years, and obviously the car stalled with a massive BANG and I basically felt like a muppet!
Anyway now when I revers it still works fine and everything, forward and back, but when I let off as I'm reversing you can here a rattling/clicking sound, I think coming from below the gearstick/handbrake area.
Obviously I'm worried what I've done, and I was just wondering if anyone has any idea? If I have damaged a cog or anything is it likely to get worse and is there anything I could do other than just replacing the box when it goes?
Pre-emptive thanks

A good look behind the rubber gaiter inside the car and a good look at the mechanism beneath this outside should trace the faulty part.
#3: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: vmondude, Location: South WalesPosted: Wed Jun 12, 2013 4:48 pm ---- Oh right ok thanks very much for your reply... I'll do some investigating.
Hope it is just something simple like that!
#4: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: eddie206, Posted: Thu Jun 20, 2013 3:22 am ---- Reading again it could be the syncro mesh on the reverse gear inside the gearbox...its there to aid the meshing movement as you select the gear...maybe youve bent it or chipped a tooth off?
If everything is ok on the linkage and the stick, top, bottom, reverse selector are all fine then its probably internal....so either live with it or get a second opinion before you fix/change the gearbox.
To be honest if its only on reverse and its not too bad id ignore it for now imo.

There is no synchro for reverse.
That's why the line has a gap on the diagram printed on top of the gear knob.
#6: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: eddie206, Posted: Thu Jun 20, 2013 3:48 am ---- Reverse still has synchro....its the fact that the reverse gear itself is non hypoid that makes it different to the forward gears...
The diagram is just showing that the stick must be lifted to engage reverse unlike the forward gears.

Are you completely insane eddie?
Seriously, I like your posts though and don't get me wrong at all!
Cheers.
P.S. I am.

It seems i am to eat humble pie...the reverse gear on a206 is in fact not synchromeshed...as it doesnt need to be...
Turns out the reverse synchromeshed gear is limited to just a few sportier models...
Like most Lambos, some alfas, and some American models such as chrysler, jeep, ford(yanks tho.)and a few others...
I would like to say that the hypoid formed gearing is correct and limited to forward gears and thats why reverse gear produces the revvy sound we all hear when we reverse...because hypoid/forward gears have diagonal teeth and reverse has straight teeth which create the revvin reverse sound as the cogs turn inside the box.

Just like the old Mini gearboxes with the straight cut gears. I loved that sound, but it was more of a whining rather than a revving.
#10: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Thu Jun 20, 2013 7:04 am ---- A series powered Mini was more to do with the idler gears on the end of the engine that transferred the engine power down in to the gearbox in the sump.
#11: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: eddie206, Posted: Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:51 pm ---- Ive probly missed out but ive not had much to do with minis, sadly.

'Was wondering about that.

Things ain't how they used to be are they?
#13: Re: "Stupid" Gearbox Issue Author: eddie206, Posted: Sat Jun 22, 2013 9:46 pm ---- Yeah thats a different way of puttin it v9977,ive never thought of it that way..but i guess we must have learnt plenty along the way...
Your right tho...were on course for followin the dinosaurs i think mate...only they reigned for millions of years..weve managed to ruin it in just 40,000or so..infact you could say that in a period of the last 100years and probably 50or so until bedlam that weve ruined what could have been amazin in a third of the lifespan of a good oak tree, about 150years...shocking really
Still i have no kids so once im gone i couldnt care less really..just my nephews to worry about and the rate there going they will probly be gratefull for bedlam to get some peice and quiet...ha!ha!!only messin,i wish them all the luck in the world because unfortunately they might just need it..
I dont know if youve noticed it but the kids(18year olds+-5)just havnt been taught much in the way of manners and unity...all the things that weve learnt that seperates us from the animals are gonna be forgotten in a generation or two..it took thousands if years for us to become so well civilized all to be wiped out in a few decades..
no manners,no conversational skills,no charity,no decency,no courting the OPPOSITE sex,no literatue read or writen,no interpersonal skills,no self respect,no knowledge of the outdoors,no finance and saving skills,etc.etc.etc.
All the things that make us the great civilized race that we are shot down in two generations to come...the problems are here now they will just get worse in years to come...I know i sound jaded but ive seen the signs and there not so hard to see and becoming bigger and bigger every time an older generations member/a pensioner dies...
Same s**t different day..haha...chin up tho...u never know that meteor might hit before the bedlam takes over...ha!?
