so i got bored and decided i'd see what swaps people offer me for the gti, next day and i think she knew as suddenly developed a tapping,on checking its coming specifically from exhaust cam cover, left side as you look from the front. it also had a fault for running lean but think thats just due to exhaust mani leak somewhere.

a mate suggested checking plugs not loose, easy enough, however also checking tappets.....this im not so sure on. ok i can get the rocker cover off,but apart from blatant damage, what am i looking for or could it be?

it sounds more metal on plastic than metal on metal and doesnt appear to have affected performance at all

first you can check the cam lobes for wear it will show itself as dark patch or pitting on the lobes the lifters i believe are Hydraulic the only way to check them is to remove and inspect quick way to find out if its cam lifter related is to pour some cam lube directly on the area refit the rocker cover and warm it at idle then blip the throttle if the noise goes its probably the lifters every Hydraulic lifter i have come across gets stuffed after low oil

really peculiar, disconnect battery while took coil pack off and checked plugs, all tight, refitted and reconnected battery, let it idle for 10 minutes and not a peep :/

Sounds just like behaviour of a dodgy lifter to me. No idea why they suddenly work after a restart.
