Instrument Lighting not working
-> 206 Problems

Hi, I've got a problem on my X reg 206 with the instrument cluster lighting. The lights behind the dials don't come on as they should when you turn on the side/head lights, not helpful when driving at night! All the other lights on the dash are working.

Took the problem to a garage, they advised me to go away and get a replacement cluster with a lower mileage which I did...same problem. Also the mileage didn't go up to the actual mileage of the car as its supposed to when I swapped the new cluster in. My one has the two connectors on the back (white and yellow).

I've checked the bulbs and the fuses, cleaned up the earth strap from battery to gearbox and checked the wire that is for the instrument lighting according to Haynes (grey one on the white connector). Can't see anything wrong with the connection on that particular pin, however there is a buzzing noise every time I connect the white connector on the cluster (with the battery still connected).

No other electrical problems on the car, am at a bit of a loss here so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Have you tried removing the dash illumination dimming wheel & bypassing it?

Sometimes the resistor inside the dimmer fails.

The mileage is stored on the cluster .. it won't increase to match what is stored on the BSI unit ... who ever told you that is talking out of their ar$e ... so I'd avoid going to that particular garage again ... Wink

Thanks, that was exactly the problem! Don't think I've ever used the dimmer while owning the pug, didn't realise what it's connected to. Decided to get a replacement switch ordered.

The garage I used claim to be experts on French cars...hmmmm... Rolling Eyes
