The car is a 04 206 1.4 HDI diesel engine. I have had it since its birth. I am not the most knowledgable at all when it comes to cars, sorry.
Basically, today I was on my way to the lakes hill-walking, when after about 15-20 miles, I got a whiff of a very slight smell. I thought at first my flask or something had leaked as it wasnt exactly an engine smell, but as I looked around I noticed that the temperature guage was far higher than I had ever seen it before, sitting at about 100 and still slowly rising. I have not noticed this problem before.
I came off the motorway and limped to a petrol station, I let the engine cool down a bit and then checked the radiator water level which seemed ok, topped it up anyway and popped in a bit more oil.
I left the hood up and the engine running but to be honest I couldnt tell if the fan was whirring or not because I've never listened to it before. A chap doing his tyres said he wasnt sure if it was working either. As chance would have it, a mechanic pulled in to fill up so I had a quick word, he said from the description and as its a 206, it could be the water pump but he couldnt have a look as he was on his way to a stock car show - fair enough.
Anyway, after about an hour at the petrol station, and giving the engine a little breather, I turned it back on and it returned to the usual position of around 70-80. Thinking it was ok I made my way back to the motorway but after about half a mile it was back at 90 again and slowly rising, so I had to abandon my trip and head home.
Getting up to 70mph the temperature went back up towards the 110 line, just short of the red, and I reckon if I had kept going it would have hit the red. I stopped at the next services although I had noticed by now that if I kept it at 60mph it tended to hover at 100 or so on the temp, but I wasnt going to chance it without another stop. Stopped for another 15 mins or so, then headed home keeping the temp to about 100 by staying at 60mph. As I came off the motorway its about 2 miles back to my house at normal 30mph speeds, and this short 2 mile trip had the temp back up to just short of 110 by the time I got back in.

Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 1:11 pm ---- travelling at steady motorway speeds and the fan should not cut in anyway as the speed of the car will push far more air through the radiator than your fan ever could so the primary cause is not a defective fan.
That leaves:-
Failed water pump - some cars have a plastic impeller and they can separate from the shaft do, Peugeots do this
Stuck thermostat.
Head gasket (do you have an oil film in your water header tank or white mayonnaise like substance in the oil filler?)
Air lock in the system.
Blocked radiator internals.
Leak.
Collapsing radiator hose.
If it was me I would start with visual inspection of the hoses and radiator. Then move to full flush and refill of the system and fit a new thermostat. After that it is into the expensive stuff like water pump or head gasket. NOTE: to check for head gasket failure as well as the hints above you can get a "sniff test" done. this checks the coolant for combustion gases and is a good test before moving to head gasket .
