#1: Car wont start Author: DCFC734, Location: ukPosted: Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:11 pm ---- Had a problem last saturday where the car would start but not first time but felt ok. Tried to start it last monday and was dead, thought it was the battery as I thoguht I saw the inside light left flicker whilst trying to start it (and the light switch was in the on position), another reason why I thought it was the battery was the pre set stations I saved on the radio were wiped eg as if the radio had just been installed.
Called the breakdown out and he attahced his battery pack up to the car, got it going after a while, thought it was ok as I went to get some petrol. The breakdown guy said something about the auto choke not working and something about it starting when cold (I presume he meant when engine cold rather than cold weather ( I start at 6am you see )).
Tried it just now and it wont start, anyone any idea what could be at fault or the cost ?
Got some jump leads but with not using them before I want to get it right, is it just connect the positive terminals on both batteries with the red cable and the 2 negatives with the black ?

Take the battery off and charge it?
#4: Re: Car wont start Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Sun Jul 28, 2013 10:58 pm ---- Well for jumping start,you don't do what you said,as that will be risky for the ECU,what you need to do is connect the positive terminals on both batteries,but when it comes to the negative side,you connect the negative terminal on the car that will jump start your car,and the negative end (connected in your car) have to be connected on earthing point in the car,as a clear position on the engine block,that is much safer.
As for your problem it's not the TPS (Auto Choke),as the car would start,but the engine won't hold idle,but in your case the battery is dead,so how old is your battey?if it's new,then you should consider checking your alternator ,if it's old,then time to replace.
Advice:Never try to start the car with a weak battery connected,as it will do damage same as high voltage.

Like I say havent done it by myself yet and wanted to be sure so thanks for that.
The battery has been in from when I had the car from new so 9 years old.
How would 1 ( a noob ) check the alternator ?
Ill let you know what happens.

It turns out the first guy who came out incorrectly diagnosed the fault whereas the guy I called out today diagnosed it correctly as ive had a new battery replaced and its fine.

Yes I was a little concerned about the battery as it had been in from new.
I only do short journeys (over last coupe of years) so maybe that brought an end to the original battery.
