Speedo not reading at all!
-> 206 Problems

#1: Speedo not reading at all! Author: Brocagh2004 PostPosted: Tue Aug 06, 2013 11:34 am
    ----
Hey there, was wondering if anyone had any advice for me?

About a month ago the speedo on my 1.4 206 stopped working totally. Occasionally it flickers up to 10mph but that's about the height of it. It has two plugs in the back connecting it to the electrics.

I was wondering if I could just buy a cheap speedo and fit it myself without any other problems? Also, if I were to do this, would the new speedo read the correct mileage when I fit it?

Cheers

What year is the car?

It's a 1999 (I think), any ideas?

Check the state of the connections on the big multiplug behind the passenger side front bumper.

i could be wrong but isnt the mileage stored in the ecu? therefore if you where to replace the speedo it would have the correct mileage on it...

Just seen this post by someone also!

Also remember any replacement cluster MUST have a LOWER mileage on else you will trigger the anti clocking feature!

Yeah I thought the mileage would be stored on the ECU and so it wouldn't be a problem replacing the speedo, but can anyone confirm for sure that this is the case before I go ahead and but a new one? Thanks

Is the odometer clocking up the miles? Or is it both speedo and odometer that aren't working?

Thanks for that; is it easy enough to get to the big multiplug behind the passenger side front bumper?

The odometer is clocking up the miles, the only thing not working is the speedo.......everything else if sound

I just changed mine, T Reg 1999, Got one from a 2000 car, You MUST get one with lower milage from a care before 2001, My mileage went from 100k down to 80k, so make sure you make a record of the old and new milage so you can always work out what the actual milage is.

The milage is stored in the unit, not the ECU, Atleast I don't think it is, when I changed mine the milage was 83000, and it didn't update to the cars higher, actual milage, so I'm pretty sure the milage is stored in the clocks.

If your car is multi-plexed, which is like after 2001 (don't know exact dates), then the car will take the mileage of the highest number to prevent clocking. If it's pre-plexed then it'll take the mileage of the actual speedo unit you put in it.

Not on a non plexed 206, they don't have anti clocking.

That suggests the speedo is at fault then. Otherwise the odometer wouldn't be working either if the problem was elsewhere.

Will be the classic non plexed speedo dodgy drive motor issue in the instrument cluster.

Thanks for that, so its best to change the whole instrument cluster with another one which has clocked up lower mileage than mine then and job done??

It can be any milage Smile

Replacement cluster

OR

Replace the dodgy drive motor in your current cluster

OR replacement cluster & you can swop a part over from old cluster to retain the correct mileage, pretty sure the info is on the forum somewhere.

Just double-checked the log book there and the car is a 2001, is that going to make a difference to any of this?

Your 206 is NON plexed as you have already said you have 2 connector plugs on the back of the cluster.

Yeah ignore what I said earlier, You can get any speedo as long as it has two plugs, milage is irrelevant.

Yeah its got two multi-cable connectors out of the back, a yellow one and a white one. Does that mean, it doesn't matter about the year of reg then?

Yes, It has to be pre-plex, which is pre-2001 I think, I always get it mixed up.

As long as it has two plugs on the back you will be fine, The one plug speedos are Multi-plex.
