Rattles and noises - VERY annoying

#1: Rattles and noises - VERY annoying Author: josh206xsi, Location: Nottinghamshire PostPosted: Wed Aug 07, 2013 8:01 am

Hi everyone,

My 206 has developed a couple of very annoying rattles.

The first of which I am not worried about but wondered if anyone could help with a fix, as it is a very high pitch rattle (sounds like a trapped hamster). I know it is coming from the passesnger side rear seat where it fixes to the latch (for making it fold) I know this as when this latch is undone and the seat is folded (even only a little) it doesnt do the noise. I have tried wedging bits of card, or spraying with wd40 but it still does it, any ideas?

The second rattle I am a little more worried about, it is coming from the engine bay and only happens between around 2800rpm and 3000rpm, it sounds like someone is shaking a paint can, and is clearly something resonating at that rpm as it stops completly out of this rev range, it is louder when accelerating hard through this area, but can also be heard (even if quiter) when cruising in this rev region, I have looked under the bonnet a few times and can't find anything loose (I should say that I haven't dismattled anything yet though, as I have no idea where it is from in the engine bay).

Anyway as always all the help is much appreciated.

Check all the bolts are tight on the seat and haven't worked loose inside the handle mounting point. The rattle could be your manifold cover or manifold itself

My daughters rear seat rattled in exactly the same way. The problem was that it wasn't latching home on one side. If I pulled the seat forward without unlatching it one side would move and one wouldn't. I never did find out how to adjust it to fix it but when she bought a full set of replacement seats the new ones fitted perfectly and the rattle disappeared.

the second rattle could also potentially be the engine cover vibrating. try removing it and driving around if you do have one. If not probably the exhaust manifold or heat shield as ukskater mentioned.

Well i checked things over again this morning, the seat is definitely bolted down and it does latch in the upright position, you can't just pull it down.
In terms of the engine bay rattle i had another feel around, the manifold and cover are tight, but i think it may be the radiator expansion bottle shaking on its metal bracket, as this seemed to wobble when forced and did sound like the noise, i am going to try and pad it out some how later, but the engine was still hot this morning so couldn't.

This seat is really annoying me now, any other ideas people?

Take the seat out and test drive it. Does the noise definitely go away?

Ps, the engine rattle was the radiator bottle Smile one rattle down, one to go.
