Clutch making a clunking noise

#1: Clutch making a clunking noise Author: Ben.M, Location: Suffolk PostPosted: Thu Aug 22, 2013 2:47 pm
    ----
I've had the car a little over 6 months (Gti 138 2004), it's made the noise since not long after I bought it but I think it's getting worse. I was just gonna sell it and get a different car but nothing out there around a similar value does it for me like my Pug.

The noise is just like a clunck when I change from 1st to 2nd and the revs aren't matched quite right, if I rev higher i.e. 3k+ it seems less likely to make the noise. It also does it if I rev high in 1st gear and drop off the accelerator.
If i'm gentle and slowly release the clutch into second gear then it's fine but, it's a Gti, I enjoy driving this car and I enjoy driving it the way a Gti is suppose to be driven, not like a granny in her 1.1 micra!

I'm 90% sure it's not the mounts, I've watched the engine while the handbrake is on and someone else has partially engadged the clutch and feathered the throttle in 1st and reverse. Engine movment seems normal.

I have noticed that the clutch pedal is a bit high but it's not slipped once yet!

If you could help i'd really appreciate it!

Thanks Smile

Don't rely on just mileage to indicate clutch wear. Low mileage cars often spend hours in traffic on short journeys with the owner riding and knackering the clutch.

the first and second gear ratios aren't that great on a standard gti imo, the first being a tad bit too low for the second... I think thats why they changed it on the 180 version... Never liked the 206 gearboxes anyways. I always start off slow when moving to second and from there on its fine.

Not too sure what the clunk is about. Could be possibly be a combination of an aged clutch and releasing the clutch too quick for the second gear.

And I think the 206 clutches bite point are generally high. Mine is at least and I just changed my clutch 3 months ago.

I've test driven a few 206's & other PSA stuff over the years for people that reckon there clutch / gearbox is knackered, 90% of the time there is nothing wrong with it & its just the normal stone age PSA design but the owner used to driving more modern Ford / Vauxhall designed stuff.

The clutch is normally high on a 206 I believe.

Oh, and there's me thinking there's something drastically wrong with my car. Think I forget that a 206 is never gonna be a perfect car Wink

Thank you for your help everyone! I'll have another post in this part or the forum soon, been letting the maintance slip a bit.
