Steering Rack Leak
-> 206 Problems

#1: Steering Rack Leak Author: JayH04, Location: Dublin, Ireland PostPosted: Wed Sep 25, 2013 4:55 pm

Hi guys,

So I have a steering rack leak. I had suspected it for quite a while as a few weeks ago, my steering was very noisy, and so I checked the PAS fluid and it was empty. Filled it back up, and tonight out of curiousity checked it again, and it was over half empty. Checked under the car very quickly and it seems it is leaking.

Looking for some advice as to where to look to discover what exactly is causing the leak? Hoping it's not an expensive fix!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Jay.

I've had the same problem, mine leaks from where the power steering pipes connect onto the rack. You can remove the clip and pull out the hoses (awkward job!) then replace the 'O' rings on the end, these perish and leak over time. Haven't got around to doing mine yet. Another thing you could try is using Slick50 p/steering fluid. It's thicker than standard fluid and meant to stop leaks, it's certainly slowed my leak down but not a permanent fix.
