If it's anything like the glow plugs on my father inlaws fabia there will be swearing crying and wishing you had not offered to do it!

So what are the plugs for on a diesel? I have never had a diesel btw....

Close but not correct. Glow plugs do operate only on cold conditions below -5 , but they are used for regeneration to increase combustion temperatures to help burn the soot away in the fap.
On diesels without fap, they are hardly used

I have to admit I envy you car knowledge and experience. Wish I had worked as a mechanic. Too late now though....
