#1: Broken Cam Belt Author: hamed206, Location: EgyptPosted: Sun Dec 01, 2013 11:53 am ---- I had a broken cam belt. I only tried to start the engine for two or three times, but after I noted a strange engine sound, I suspected the cam belt and stopped trying to start the engine. I opened the cover, and I found the belt broken. What are the other damage possibilities?
The garage will look at it tomorrow. But I'm afraid there are damaged valves too. Is this possible? Again, I only tired to start the engine 2-3 times.
Regards

#3: Re: Broken Cam Belt Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Sun Dec 01, 2013 1:09 pm ---- well you might have no damage at all,as starting won't do much damage as having the belt broken while driving on high speeds, but only time would tell,as the garage will fit new timing belt, and start the engine, everything will be clear.

Bent valves minimum. Possibly broken valve guides and cracked piston depending on engine speed when it went.

Once was too many ... although it will have already been damaged ...
Assume it is a petrol engine? Diesels may survive a bit better but no engine comes out unscathed.
#7: Re: Broken Cam Belt Author: Lecktorious, Location: ScotlandPosted: Sun Dec 01, 2013 4:09 pm ---- Stick a belt on it first before you start taking the engine apart. Might be lucky and have gotten away without any damage.
#8: Re: Broken Cam Belt Author: hamed206, Location: EgyptPosted: Mon Dec 02, 2013 1:55 pm ---- I got the issue sorted today. The garage found the cam belt slipped from its position due to a faulty water pump. The belt was not broken. I was lucky that no damage was found with the engine parts (valves, pistons..etc) that is because I didn't try that much to start the engine when the cam belt was slipping.
I just have replaced the water pump & fitted a new cam belt. Total job costed me around 100GBP included spare parts.
Cheers.

#11: Re: Broken Cam Belt Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Wed Dec 04, 2013 3:43 am ---- Reasonable deal provided it is pulleys, water pump as well as belt! Though on ebay full kits with belt, pelleys and water pump can be bought for as little as £42.

I bought the OEM cam belt for 17.5GBP, and the OEM water pump for 45GBP. Isn't the price of these parts the same in UK?
Cost of the job may differ from place to another, but the original Peugeot parts should have almost the same price in anywhere.
