Hello i am a newbie from somerset ,i have just recently purchased a 206 xsi 2005 1.6 16v and there is a couple of things i would like some advise on if possible please ,firstly i have oil on the sides of the exspantion tank but water looks ok .secondly there seems to be a nocking noise coming from under the car somewhere from the front when i go over the slightest bump whilst driving at all speeds ,ive looked under car and all looks ok the only thing i did find was the gear linkage rod has lots of movement in it mainly where the nylon ball is at the front where the link bars are connected does this sound to be the problem i checked with a main dealer here in taunton and they told me they are not the best of engineering and rarely go ,has anyone got any ideas on the matter ,also is the timming belt replacement a easy operation on this engine thanks craig

Hi nobrlz66,

Sounds like you've got a similar problem to me with the knocking noise, does it sound like it's coming from the front suspension? I've started replacing the cheapest items 1st, anti-roll bar bushes followed by drop links, it's quietened it down a little but still not got to the bottom of the issue.

not sure about the gear linkage

for your knocking, if it is not the drop links, jack up the front of the car, on the side that the noise is coming from, leave the wheel on.

When the wheel is off the ground, try rocking it with your hands at 12 and 6 o clock... if there is play, lower ball joint. Should be absolutely NO play.

After that, try rocking at 3 and 9 o clock... if there is excessive play it will be your track rod end. Others will comment on what play is acceptable.

If neither then you need to investigate further Wink this is the stage I am at with my knocking.

same as above also have a look at your wishbone bushes just had to replace mine

(not sure if this is the diagnosis but my wheel could be tilted in and out by pushing it into the car)

also look for leaks from your shocks, and for a broken spring, top mounts can go to. done a complete front suspension overhaul on mine recent. no rattles, knocks or funny noises now.. Smile
drop links were in a right state !
