#1: Weird ABS/ESP fault on a GTI180 Author: Kale, Location: Southern FinlandPosted: Mon Dec 16, 2013 2:06 am ---- The car is a 2003 model GTI180 (or a RC as we call them here in Finland). It is owned by a friend of mine and I'm tackling with this matter now.
During last winter the car came up with a ABS fault warning, ABS brakes and ESP stopped working of course. It wasn't a concern at that moment because MOT wasn't due untill now.
The car owner replaced both front ABS sensors and it didn't help at all.
A couple of months ago the codes were read and they informed that the ESP ecu had low voltage sometimes (?) and the left front ABS sensor had a fault that was "internal". This was curious because the dealership said that sensor faults are usually open circuits or similar and they had never before seen "internal faults" on these.
Well, as a Peugeot enthuasist I bought myself a PP2000/Lexia cable set and started looking around. The low voltage fault goes away when the fault codes are reset (and comes back occasionally) but the front left sensor internal fault stays on no matter what.
While looking at the live data feed from the sensors it reads that the voltage is fine, between 12-13 volts when the car it stationary and not running and around 14.5 when the car is running. Normal battery readings.
The odd thing is that it says that the front left sensor is getting a reading of whoppy 650.4 km/h Unplugging the sensor wire from the harness "on fly" doesn't affect the reading so I thought ok, the ABS/ESP ecu might be faulty.
I got a used working ABS/ESP pump unit from this forum last week and changed it but guess what. Nothing changed. It's still getting that same fault from the left front sensor and it's still doing that 650.4km/h.
What is done so far:
*both front ABS sensors renewed
*battery died last summer so it was replaced
*battery negative leads replaced to uprated ones, both - from engine to chassis and from battery to engine
*all the fuses are checked - inside the car and the engine compartment ones
*ABS/ECU pump unit replaced
So does anyone have any great ideas? Next I'm going to go through all the wiring around the abs unit with a multimeter. From the unit to sensors etc. Also going to perform a visual check on the same wires.. But if this doesn't help - then I feel I'm in a dead end with the car..

Also, as I said before, it gives a live feed of 650.4km/h from the front left sensor, even when the car is not running.
And yes, my next stop on this quest is to measure the wires from the pump to the sensor connector. Damn it would be neat to remove the wiring harness from the car and check every wire for breakups...
I just remembered, the car had a immobiliser fault last winter. It was sorted by the dealership at that time and the fault was somewhere around the same spots in wiring that had corroded from the inside due to water ingress from a connector somewhere (water rising up inside the wiring starting from the connector, capillary effect). As I said, this isn't my car so I can't remember clearly.. I'll ask the friend of mine about that if he remembers.

BUT
ESP warning light is still on, PP2000 gives an error code Flywheel angle sensor coherence under from the ABS/ESP unit, what could this mean?

Could the "new" unit be somewhat faulty? It says it's a permanent fault and won't go away when I try to erase the error codes.

Ballast create lot of interferences on abs unit.

You sure it said flywheel? I don't see what effect the flywheel would have on ABS/ESP (but might just be lack of knowledge on my part though) - but there is an steering wheel angle sensor that tells the ESP system how you're trying to steer the car, compared to how it senses the car actually behave... As I understand it this may need recalibration after work on the front suspension / steering.

It was quite a wtf moment for me also, and it showed it when I searched for error codes on ABS/ESP. No fault codes on engine or BSI. Steering angle sensor has been calibrated a couple of times actually.
I'm changing the old ABS unit back on tomorrow because it didn't do this. And I believe it's in working condition because the fault was in the wiring.
I found an old topic here on the same forum about similar problem but there is no info about how it ended..

The car disliked the UK ABS/ESP unit, changed the original back on (as the fault was in the wiring) and everything works like charm. Now I only need to find a catalytic converter somewhere to get it pass MOT (as there is only a empty cat shell with a straight pipe running through on the car at the moment).
