all started when I put a part worn on , the steering when I first got the car it felt tight and stiff like a real car now it just feels all saggy and loose I have replaced the lower arms I have done tie rod ends also changed drop links , it has 4 brand new toyo proxys in each corner . I have a feeling that its the steering rack as the fluid in the pump is full and there's no noise coming from the pump . is there anyway I can determine wheather or not it is the rack ? thanks puggers

Track rod inner ends or the rack is fubar. I just replaced the whole steering rack to a low mileage one on a GTI180 I was working on. There was a MASSIVE play on the steering wheel before it started turning the wheels.

As I could not come by a GTI180 rack when doing it (as there are probably around 20-30 of these in Finland, and a 2nd hand one from UK would be useless as you guys drive on the wrong side of the road Wink ), I used one from a XSI, just used the old GTI180 pinion valve (the valve thingy on the rack where the steering wheel axle is fitted on). Worked like charm and the steering was stiff and responsive again.
