Rough idle with various coolant temperature
-> 206 Problems

#1: Rough idle with various coolant temperature Author: cheekyage, Location: Australia PostPosted: Mon Feb 10, 2014 5:21 am

Hi all,

Today I noticed a bit of a rough idle and the coolant temperature gauge moving slightly above halfway then going back just under...then back up, then down.

I noticed the coolant gauge would only move up during idle or while the car is stationary. Once driving the coolant temp would go back down to just on halfway.

The weather temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the car has been driven for about 10 minutes prior. Major service completed less than 3 months ago.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Think about it. You are sitting stationary in 25 degree heat. There is no air hitting the radiator, so the coolant temperature rises until the cooling fans kick in and bring it back down. This is why the temperature is fluctuating.

Apologies for sounding so noob.

Even with a higher weather tempreture of over 25 degrees I've never noticed the gauge moving.

But it does make complete sense as you mentioned Lecktorious.

Yes, temp gauge movingh sounds normal. i do not think the two things are related. Clear fault codes; take it for a drive until you get a repeat of the rough idles and re-check fault codes.
