#1: Gears getting a bit crunchy especially 3rd Author: Sunny_Gee, Posted: Wed Feb 26, 2014 2:58 pm ---- Hey guys
so before you spout off that the clutch is going, its not because i had it replaced about 2 months ago, unfortunately that was the first thing i did 2 weeks after having it... someone told me a porky
Now the gears seems a bit crunchy especially 3rd, hope my gear box isnt going now
any other suggestions?
Possible gear box oil but somewhere on-line it states they recommend you don't chage the oil
so thought i would see what you guys think

If it where me, I'd get the box oil changed and see if that makes a difference, probably the cheapest option as well. You might want to check that the gear linkages and clutch cable are set correctly as well.
If it doesn't solve the problem then the 2nd cheapest option is a replacement gearbox from the breakers, I'd think around £50 for the box + labour to fit.
The final option is a recon box but you'll probably be looking at £400+, just a rough guess though.

Drop the oil and stick some fresh in and see what happens though.
My 1.4HDi box is a pig at times when cold, not too bad when warmed up.

Changing the oil helped to smooth things out straight away.

I had a mate have a little look at the gear box oil he got the cap of but couldnt stick anything down it to check the levels. Don't i have to take the gearbox off to change the oil?

If it dribbles out then should be enough there.
If not either top it up or on the bottom of the diff housing there will be a similar drain plug.
I know the BE3 box takes 2 litres, and the MA (which you have, isn't that big) shouldn't be much over a litre.

Believe its 75/80
Though I've ran 80/90 before because that is all I had. (think thats what's in my HDi at the moment)
The only gearbox I've found & heard to be absolutely fussy on gear oil is the 306 GTI6 box.
