#1: Handbrake Adjust problem Author: jamie-38-206, Posted: Sat Apr 12, 2014 10:45 am ---- Going through the Handbrake Adjust guide today. but my Equaliser plate is not horizontal as right hand cable is further forward than the left one. this is the case when the handbrake is up or down.
I have not adjusted the handbrake yet as I noticed this problem.
Any ideas why the cables are like this?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Before I do, is it possible to lubricate or un-seize any parts or is it best just to order up new shoes / drums? Car is approaching 59000 so not sure if they have ever been replaced before as only got the car 3000 miles ago.

I have a feeling that one of the auto adjusters inside the drum has failed. These can be removed and cleaned, and then adjusted up properly before the drums go back on. I had a similar issue on mine, replaced the auto adjusters and it levelled up.
Easy way to tell is jack the rear of the car up, put the handbrake on and try and turn the wheel by hand.
You should also replace the hub nuts whenever you remove the drums, and when refitting torque them up correctly IIRC 200Nm. If they are over tightened, then you run the risk of the bearing not running smoothly on the stub axle and causing premature failure, which can result in your car becoming a Robin Reliant, if they are too loose, then you will get wheel wobble.

They stretch a lot over time and need to be replaced in pairs if they've been in use a long time otherwise the braking force will be very uneven and more than the equaliser plate can deal with which should be pretty much at right angles to the cables

Note that the auto adjuster is quite comples so tke lots of pictures before stripping. You may find that the notched nuts (niut sure what they are really called) have been damaged by previous bodger. You can adjust manually but it isn't the real way to do it.
If the drums are old be prepared for them to be badly lipped. The lip then cathces on the shoes making it quite hard to get the drum off.
