#1: Decided to stay with my new 206 GTI 180 Author: eteej, Posted: Thu May 22, 2014 6:13 am ---- Hey guys,
Intro'd myself the other day after picking up a 206 GTI 180 this last weekend.
Its a 2005 plate, one previous owner who racked up a stonking 175K miles on it but in a very good condition.
I took it to the garage for a "health check" and to check the cam as the guy I brought it off swore it was done 2 years ago.
Anyway, despite the MOT showing just 2 advisories of sleight ball joint play there was a fair list of stuff:
Full service needed with all filters
Cam belt was frayed, and cracking with visible wear
Left Wishbone
2 front link rods
CV Boot
All 4 disks and pads
Basically it looks like the car was MOT'd by a mate of his or something as the garage I took it to said that the brakes are dangerous, and I could tell driving it they were unresponsive. Also the sleight play is a lot worse than that.
I was toying with selling the car straight off, but I did get it cheap anyway and knew it "might" need a cambelt.
After deliberation, calling in favours, and finding that the garage I had never been to that is 200 yards from my house is full of a great bunch of lads I have decided to keep the car.
I managed to pick up all of the parts needed for just under £400 including the VAT, and as I said the guys can keep the car for a week to do the work when they have downtime on different days, they will do the work all in for £250.
Whereas the garage I first took it to for the checkover had to send it elsewhere for the belt. For all of the parts and work on it wanted just shy of £1100.
Once I get it back I will put some pictures up, but looks like I am officially a 206 owner!
