Drive shaft/Gear box issue

#1: Drive shaft/Gear box issue Author: Lux_Peugeot206 PostPosted: Tue Jun 17, 2014 2:43 pm

Hi Guys....

Bit of a wierd one, back in December 2013 I changed the clutch my 04 206. Every went as well as could hope however I noticed it delevoped this clunking noise when initially pulling off in a straight line.

I recently did some investigtion and found when the left hand drive shaft is turned by hand it turns ok until a point when it feels like the shaft has caught on some thing and it will go stiff to turn then after about a fifth of a turn (of the wheel) the pressure releases with a clunk and the shaft will turn normally again.

It doesn't do this every time.

I had the left drive shaft out today inspected it and the internal of where it enters the gear box, everything looked fine the splines looked good.
However when I reinstalled it the issue remained and when it goes tight on turning then releases the whole engine moves to the right by perhaps an 8th of an inch (enough to notice it moving) and makes the clunking noise.

There is no evidence of any fluid leakage from the shaft or box.

Any advice on this would be appreciated it is a bit unusual, I was thinking of installing a new drive shaft just to eliminate a part.

what u described usually caused by a faulty drive shaft,as it got metal balls inside it,if there is anything faulty by these,it cause a hard move,as these metal balls have a fixed space,if they get close to each other, they bite.
So replace it,and see how things goes.

Just an update to the post:

I have now replaced the driveshaft which is a success, when I cut open the old rubber for examining I found the internal spring have snapped so was obviously getting caught up caused the tightness.

So this is all good however the creaking of the who gearbox still exists, the car runs so much smoother now but when going over bumps especially the whole box makes a creaking noise., it really is hard to describe the noise.

I must admit I am not sure how worried by this I am, now I have found and cured the driveshaft I feel like I will just run it and see how it goes, unless anyone else has any advice?

Thanks for the help! Thumb Up
