ticking / tapping sound

#1: ticking / tapping sound Author: daninmanchester PostPosted: Wed Jun 18, 2014 4:11 pm
    ----
My 206 GTI 2.0 2005 63K miles recently developed a tapping/ticking noise.

It's hard to pin point where from. Sounds like it is coming from the main engine block and not the cam belt.

Not sure if it is an acoustic dynamic of where I park but it sounds louder below the car.

The tapping occurs at all speeds and increases as the revs increase.

I read it it could be the tappets especially if the oil is low. No idea if this is correct but on checking oil was very low so I added some, let it run for 5 mins and no change.

It's always had a bit of a rough idle since I got it and it revs a bit high until warm but i put this down to a dodgy sensor. That problem goes once warm so being a diligent car owner I have ignored it.

I mostly get my fuel from Texaco, sometimes Tesco. I noticed it started more or less after my latest refill which was from sainsburys. Which is probably a coincidence, but you never know.

I think I have the same problem. Hard to describe to any mechanic I go to.. But definitely a ticking sound that increases with the revs. Not very loud but doesnt sound right and only started this year. (Peugeot 206 GTI, 2003 - 50 000 km)

The oil does now seem to have now helped. It's still not as smooth as it was.
I think the tappets might be the issue but I do wonder if I have a minor timing issue as it is a bit rougher/diesel sounding than it was.

I think its the bearings or the on the serpintine belt. maybe one of the pulleys or tensioners. I have the same issue and I will get round to fixing it when the cam belt gets changed.

I chased a similar fault for months on an mr2. Turned out to be the join from the manifold to cat converter, although there were no obvious signs of a leak!? To this day it still puzzles me but at least it gives you another option.
