Hi all, New memeber here Very Happy

Was just wondering if anyone can help and give advice regards my sons motor...
Its a 2004 1.1 engine 3 door S model
Only done 50K miles

Problems started when i was driving it around town, there was a lack of power pulling away and when changing up gear, but once we got on the dual carriageway the car got us home ok

Anyways, when we get home i flipped the hood and there is a rattle which seems to be coming from the rear of the engine bay and everytime the rattle clicks in the engine speed stutters a bit.
Its a noise ive never heard before and didnt sound good, like something was broken and running around loose inside the engine Sad

I thought the lack of power could be the spark plugs which were overdue for replacement, so i changed them and the air filter and cabin filter too.
I thought the coil could be at fault too as this had been changed a year ago after it failed and left us stranded on the motorway.

What with one thing and another i never got round to looking at it for a few weeks, so then i had to jump the battery and it started ok but the rattle was still there. after some fiddling about i tried to jump it again...
The starter jammed, even after i fully charged the battery the starter wouldnt turn.

So, i thought the starter is at fault and maybe it was responsible for the rattle... that makes sense Confused

So £50 later i`ve got the new starter in and at first that wouldn`t turn either
after the third attempt it turned the engine over but it was a terrible noise, sounded like the crank was rumbling all the way thru the car and it didnt sound like it was gonna fire at all....

anyways.... so after some thought i took the top cover off the cam belt and fired it over, the crank must be turning because the aux belt turns but the top of the cambelt didnt turn so now the cambelt must have snapped...

So, now this is the way i see it...
Something was rattling loose and has now jammed, but the crank must be turning but now the belt has snapped the cam isnt.

obviously it now needs a new cam belt and new valves but what caused the rattling and what other damage has been done ??

If the flywheel had jammed and putting in the new starter had freed it why did the belt snap ???

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated Smile

sorry for the life story Confused

Flywheel wouldnt have jammed, probably was the water pump or a tebsioner breaking down. I have heard of clutches breaking up and bits flying everywhere inside the gearbox housing

Buy a second hand cylinder head and just whack it on, be a lot cheaper way round it all

Hi, Thanks for your response Smile

I had a chat with a friend of friend that likes getting his hands greasy..

He says, the cambelt had probaly slipped and put the timing slighty out and the rattle was probaly one piston hitting the valve, to the point where they have jammed the camshaft gear together,
and my persevrance with the starter had forced the crank to snap the belt

or indeed as you mentioned the water pump or tensioner had jammed, and my forcing the starter had snapped the belt and probaly bent the valves
although the noise never seemed to be coming from that end and we`ve had no water or heating problems.

Could just be tappets out your noise. Some can be bloody loud!

orr pistons hitting valves because the timing belt tensor has failed. he could have bent con rods, damaged pistons or rings, or scored bores.

Yea, thats more towards what i`m thinking,
although i wasnt banking on Piston, rings or bore damage Sad

made a phone call today just out of curiousity...

Quoted £1175 for FITTED Recon Engine

or 995 fit it yourself

If your gonna replace the engine you might as well ask your friend to pull the head off to have a look first. You might be lucky and just need valves

if a wee valve manages to bend a rod on a Tu, im morgan freeman.

Ive seen first hand valves drop off on a dv6, and all that was required was a piston

Hi Morgan Freeman , Razz

Do you think its worth me just having a crack at replacing the cam belt and lining up the timimg again.

If the valves are damaged then the head can come off afterwards...

Just wanna try and work out how much damage has been done without costly garage repairs...
