#1: 2001 1.6 206cc starting issues, well not always! Author: double_tap_that, Location: Cornwall PostPosted: Wed Sep 10, 2014 4:45 pm

Hello guys, this is my first post and im looking for some advice or any ideas with my problem!
I have a 2001 206cc, has a 1.6 engine, now the problem is, sometimes, the car will start on the button (key), either hot or cold, but at times, wont start, it will crank over nicely but just wont fire up.
I have listened to other owners and they say, open the car door, put key in ignition, turn key to where you can hear the fuel pump, and when i do this, it nearly always start, but sometimes, i dont hear the door open buzzer nor do i hear the fuel pump buzzing, thus, no starting!.
Is this where i need to look at the ignition aerial as my first port of deductions, or is this something im over looking?!
When it starts, it does not stalll, misfire, or judder etc, just drives fine.
Its just like playing roulette where you dont know its going to start or not.
Again, makes no difference if the engine is cold, or hot.
Many thanks for reading this long but i hope, gives you the picture im trying to paint so to speak!
Cheers

I would be whacking it on PP2000 and see if the BSi is seeing a key signal, if it isnt. Try a key, as its the easiest thing to try

Try a key? I have only one key so do you mean the key can be tested? Or you mean buying a new key from Peugeot and have it "Matched"?

Yes, buy a brand new key from peugeot and have it coded to the vehicle just like the other key

Actually, ive just had a thought. Does the car lock when it doesnt start? As i think i know what it may be, but it would be expensive fix

I never really tried or noticed, I tend to leave the car unlocked in my garage and even if i go out i dont tend to lock it anyway, I know its not wise, but i live in a corner of england where its usually safe.
I will try tomorrow and see if it does, or not, but will reply to let you know either way.
Thanks

Either way, if you can take the BSi out and check for water ingress. I had the near on same fault with another 206, non start completely out of the blue on a 2001

Removed the bsi, took it apart and found water ingress. It looks like a clouding over the circuit board

BSI, ?
Ps, just popped in garage and seems the remote is not locking the vehicle, but i put the key in ignition and it started first time, If you can tell me where the bsi is, i will have a look tomorrow and take it out and dry it?
Thanks Addaz.

Have you tried a new battery in the remote?

2001 is right on the changeover from pre-plex to multi-plex. I have heard that flat remote batteries can cause starting issues in a pre-plex.

This thread shows you how to tell the difference between the 2 electrical systems

This sort of explains the BSI although it's for the multi-plex.

I think i would start by cleaning the connections at the car battery and earths. I know it turns over well but modern cars as soooooooo temperamental on voltage!

The transponder immobiliser aerial on the non plexed 206 are also known for being crap.

I'd be tempted to try another.

FYI: There £35 brand new from any Peugeot / Citroen dealer, so don't get ripped of / overpay in the scrapyard / Ebay.

If you can get it scanned with Peugeot Planet, that would be a big help to you.

My car is or was built June 2001, and i see in October 2001 they changed, So i have the older style with the problematic aerial transponder immobiliser.
I will buy one and guessing they are all the same and have it fitted by my local auto electrician, we will see if it cures the problem.
Cheers

616068 is the correct part number for a pre-plex aerial, so yes that should be the right one.

Thanks, I bought it but do i need to get Peugeot to fit it as it may require adapting to my car? Or is it a simple push and plug in job?
Sorry to ask so many questions, But i don't want to be conned by a garage saying i need more work when really, i dont.
Thanks again

Its simple plug & play, the aerial isn't coded.
